Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde im Friedensvertrag von Versailles Polens Unabhängigkeit festgehalten und Danzig zur freien Stadt unter dem Protektorat des Völkerbunds erklärt. Dennoch belasteten Grenzstreitigkeiten die deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen von Beginn an. 1926 gelangte in Polen Marschall Pilsudski an die Macht, der sich um Verständigung mit Deutschland bemühte. Die Weimarer Republik reagierte mit Forderungen nach Grenzrevision und militärischer Gleichberechtigung. Nach Abschluss des Nichtangriffspakts von 1934 setzte eine Phase der Entspannung der nachbarschaftlichen Beziehungen ein, die jedoch nicht lange andauern sollte: Im April 1939 kündigte das Deutsche Reich den Pakt auf, am 1. September überfielen die Deutschen Polen. Die Historiker und Polen-Experten Peter Oliver Loew und Jerzy Kochanowski zeichnen im vierten Band der Deutsch-Polnischen Geschichte die angespannten Beziehungen der Nachbarländer von der Zwischenkriegszeit bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges nach.

The volume focuses on the years following the First World War (1918–1923), when political, military, cultural, social and economic developments consolidated to a high degree in Eastern Europe. This period was shaped, on the one hand, by the efforts to establish an international structure for peace and to set previously oppressed nations on the road to emancipation. On the other hand, it was also defined by political revisionism and territorial claims, as well as a level of political violence that was effectively a continuation of the war in many places, albeit under modified conditions. Political decision-makers sought to protect the emerging nation states from radical political utopias but simultaneously had to rise to the challenges of a social and economic crisis, manage the reconstruction of the many extensively devastated landscapes and provide for the social care and support of victims of war.

In diesem Band werden historische Romane österreichischer Autorinnen präsentiert, die bislang entweder marginal behandelt oder ganz übersehen wurden, deren literarisches Schaffen aber zu ihrer Zeit auf große Resonanz stieß. Dabei werden sowohl die literarischen und biographischen Porträts der Autorinnen einer Generation, die von der Ersten zur Zweiten Republik schufen, als auch – durch neue Werkanalysen – die österreichische Literaturgeschichte vervollständigt. Der Weiblichkeitsdiskurs in den jeweiligen Geschichtstransformationen spielt dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Research has shown that the historical novels after 1918 are more concerned with the present than with the past. They reflect the political and social upheavals as well as the contemporaneous changes in the First Republic of Austria. This volume presents historical novels by Austrian women authors who have so far either received marginal treatment or been overlooked altogether, but whose literary work was met with great resonance in their time. Apart from literary works, biographical portraits of the generation of female authors who flourished during the First and Second Republic are delineated, as well as – through new analyses of works – the history of Austrian literature. The discourse of femininity in the respective historical transformations also plays an important role in this presentation.
