Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde im Friedensvertrag von Versailles Polens Unabhängigkeit festgehalten und Danzig zur freien Stadt unter dem Protektorat des Völkerbunds erklärt. Dennoch belasteten Grenzstreitigkeiten die deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen von Beginn an. 1926 gelangte in Polen Marschall Pilsudski an die Macht, der sich um Verständigung mit Deutschland bemühte. Die Weimarer Republik reagierte mit Forderungen nach Grenzrevision und militärischer Gleichberechtigung. Nach Abschluss des Nichtangriffspakts von 1934 setzte eine Phase der Entspannung der nachbarschaftlichen Beziehungen ein, die jedoch nicht lange andauern sollte: Im April 1939 kündigte das Deutsche Reich den Pakt auf, am 1. September überfielen die Deutschen Polen. Die Historiker und Polen-Experten Peter Oliver Loew und Jerzy Kochanowski zeichnen im vierten Band der Deutsch-Polnischen Geschichte die angespannten Beziehungen der Nachbarländer von der Zwischenkriegszeit bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges nach.

The volume focuses on the years following the First World War (1918–1923), when political, military, cultural, social and economic developments consolidated to a high degree in Eastern Europe.
