Excerpt from We and Our Children Growth is its business, growth the only thing that it insists upon. After we have done our own growing, our Chief excuse for further existence is to make our babies grow. Grown-ups could get along in tree-tops and in caves, but for the shelter Of the child houses had to be invented. There was only one room in the primitive house and that was the nursery. And the modern one ought to be run on the same plan. Cities, on the other hand, were made to huddle in for shelter against enemies, or to do business in. Now the most urgent demand of thoughtful lovers of their kind is that they should be made places to grow children in. And the community would profit just as much by such a change as the children would. Any place which is not fit to rear a child in is not fit for a man or a woman to live in. Excerpt from Our Children "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." The various lots of man in this world seem to be dealt out very unequally. That of some people appears to be cast in a sunny plain of uninterrupted prosperity and enjoyment, where there is nothing to do but go forward jauntily, taking little care for the morrow. That of others is undoubtedly thrown amid difficulties, and troubles, and sorrows; hardly a step of it can be taken but rocks jut out ahead, impeding the course, and thorns press into the foot. Excerpt from The Gentle Heart: A Second Series of Talking to the Children The other day a friend brought me a song which was sung in Italy six hundred years ago. He Called it The Song of the Gentle Heart. It is a song in praise of gentleness in the life, and of gentle deeds and words and thoughts. And what the song says is, that all gentleness has its home in the heart; and that unless there be gentleness in the heart there can be none in the life. At the time this song was sung, there were many who thought that gentleness could only be found in palaces and castles, and among the people who dress in splendid Clothes. But the song says that it may also be found in the most humble cot tages, and among people whose hands are rough with daily toil. It is the gentle heart which makes people gentle. Whether a home be rich or poor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from Old Testament Stories: Selected for the Children These stories from the Bible are very old. Hundreds of years before they were written down at all they were told over and over again to 'the children of Israel by their parents. You may be sure that the things about their forefathers which were remembered for so long were the things that made the people of long ago most real to the children of Israel. And they are real to us too, for we see that these men of the old world were not unlike ourselves: the good people then loved obedience and patience, kindness and truth and the evil things they had to fight against were dis obedience, bad temper, and deceit.
