"Who do you say that I am?" This question that Jesus asked of his disciples, so central to his mission, became equally central to the fledgling church. How would it respond to the Gnostics who answered by saying Jesus was less than fully human? How would it respond to the Arians who contended he was less than fully God? It was these challenges that ultimately provoked the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325. In this volume covering the first half of the article in the Nicene Creed on God the Son, John Anthony McGuckin shows how it countered these two errant poles by equally stressing Jesus' authentic humanity (that is, his fleshliness and real embodiment in space and time) and his spiritual glory or full divinity. One cottage industry among some historical theologians, he notes, has been to live in a fever of conspiracy theory where orthodox oppressors dealt heavy-handedly with poor heretics. Or the picture is painted of ancient grassroots inclusivists being suppressed by establishment elites. The reality was far from such romantic notions. It was in fact the reverse. The church who denounced these errors did so in the name of a greater inclusivity based on common sense and common education. The debate was conducted generations before Christian bishops could ever call on the assistance of secular power to enforce their views. Establishing the creeds was not a reactionary movement of censorship but rather one concerned with the deepest aspects of quality control. Ultimately, what was and is at stake is not fussy dogmatism but the central gospel message of God's stooping "down in mercy to enter the life of his creatures and share their sorrows with them. He has lifted up the weak and the broken to himself, and he healed their pain by abolishing their alienation."

I Believe In God written by Thomas P. Rausch and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-24 with Religion categories.

In the spirit of nineteenth-century philosopher John Stuart Mill's admonition to fully, frequently, and fearlessly" discuss what we profess to be true in order that it remain a "living truth" rather than dead dogma, Thomas P. Rausch gives us I Believe in God: A Reflection on the Apostles' Creed. Rausch carefully explores the controversies that led to the development of the Creed and thereby brings the Creed to life for modern readers. More important, he maintains that the Creed is most fully alive when those who profess it do so as a personal response to their baptismal call. I Believe in God carefully unpacks the three articles of the Creed but does so always with an eye and heart toward communion with God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As baptized Christians, to profess the Creed is to be committed to enter more deeply into this trinitarian relationship and thus more fully into communion with one another. Rausch clearly shows that the Apostles' Creed is grounded in Scripture, first came to expression in the church's baptismal liturgy, and can be better understood in light of contemporary theological reflection. Attentive to the ways in which the language of the Creed is relevant to the experience of twenty-first-century Christians, he leads us to understand what Pope Benedict meant when he said the Creed is "a tiny summa in which everything essential is expressed." With Rausch's guidance, readers will confess those essentials with greater conviction and appreciation.

I believe we need to ask ourselves this question: what do I truly believe? When it comes to God, either you believe there is a God, or you believe there is no God. Everyone believes in something. Even atheists believe in something. Atheists tend to believe in their own power to direct their lives, or they tend to believe that destiny is what they make it. The point is, you believe in something-no matter who you are. I hope through this book you will grow closer to Christ and find the joy, comfort, and peace that comes from His forgiveness. I also hope that you are encouraged to believe in the one and only true God. There is only one God by nature. So sit down and take a minute to ask yourself, "What do I believe?"

As We Believe So We Behave written by David E. Leininger and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Religion categories.

When it comes to our faith, what exactly do we believe? ManyChristians might be hard-pressed to give a coherent answer to that question... atleast on their own. Yet we do clearlyarticulate our faith week in and week out during worship as we repeat thefamiliar affirmations in the Apostles' Creed. And we not only give voice tothese statements, we also live them - since belief and behavior areinextricably linked, even if we are not always aware of it. For example, if webelieve that we will be burned when we touch a hot iron, then we will avoidtouching it. What we believe determineshow we behave. If we truly believe the creed, how does that affect ourbehavior? If we truly believe in one God, the Father almighty or in JesusChrist, his only Son, our Lord, how do our lives reflect that belief? As WeBelieve, So We Behave examines each tenet of the Apostles' Creed andilluminates how it affects what we say and do on a daily basis. Leiningerdemonstrates that the faith statements embedded in the creed are not drycollections of ancient words mumbled quietly every Sunday. Rather, they arevibrant and vital elements in our walk with God, impacting every aspect of ourlives.David E. Leiningeris the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Warren, Pennsylvania. He has alsoserved congregations in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Priorto entering the ministry, Leininger had a successful career for almost twodecades in radio and television. He is the author of God of Justice, A Color-BlindChurch, and two volumes of LectionaryTales for the Pulpit (for Cycles A and B), and his sermons have appeared inthe Best Sermons 4 anthology(HarperCollins). When we examine the Bible we find that God has always desired that we would One God, One Lord, One Church all be one with one another as He and Jesus are one. Jesus Himself prayed that we would all be one, John 17:11, 21, 23. God has desired that we the Church would operate from one law and one ordinance, Numbers 15:15. It is crucial that the Church come together as one because divided we fall and together we shall stand and the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church.
