Excerpt from Why We Behave Like Human Beings By complete I mean comprehensive. This is the most comprehensive account of human beings that I know of. It is as up-to-date as I can make it. It moves as fast as I can make it, and avoids blind alleys which lead nowhere. It does touch many problems not yet solved or only partially guessed at; its handling of such problems is as sound and sane as I can make it with the help of many friends. This does not commit them for my errors of omission and com mission, nor lessen my responsibility for statements of fact or inferences from facts and hypotheses - nor signify that they approve an anthropologist's use of their materials for his story. Unfortunately, we witness human beings killing each other. A very upsetting and worrying situation, it is also strange that we do so yet claim to be the most supernatural creatures in this world. When we have things, we want more; when we do not have things, we complain because we do not have them. We do not usually know what we want because we are human beings. We know how valuable our loved ones are to us once they die because we are human beings. We believe in dreams more than we believe in our friends. We run away from each other when we have problems, but we smile and get together when we have no problems because we are human beings. We are more in love with money than with anything else because we are human beings. We always wait for help rather than proactively help others because we are human beings. This book tries to explain in simple terms how to be a good human being and become successful in life. This book is a tribute to the author’s friend, who passed away from leukemia.

This open access book – as the title suggests – explores some of the historical roots and epistemological ramifications of perspectivism. Perspectivism has recently emerged in philosophy of science as an interesting new position in the debate between scientific realism and anti-realism. But there is a lot more to perspectivism than discussions in philosophy of science so far have suggested. Perspectivism is a much broader view that emphasizes how our knowledge (in particular our scientific knowledge of nature) is situated; it is always from a human vantage point (as opposed to some Nagelian "view from nowhere"). This edited collection brings together a diverse team of established and early career scholars across a variety of fields (from the history of philosophy to epistemology and philosophy of science). The resulting nine essays trace some of the seminal ideas of perspectivism back to Kant, Nietzsche, the American Pragmatists, and Putnam, while the second part of the book tackles issues concerning the relation between perspectivism, relativism, and standpoint theories, and the implications of perspectivism for epistemological debates about veritism, epistemic normativity and the foundations of human knowledge.

The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia of the National Academy of Sciences address scientific topics of broad and current interest, cutting across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Each year, four or five such colloquia are scheduled, typically two days in length and international in scope. Colloquia are organized by a member of the Academy, often with the assistance of an organizing committee, and feature presentations by leading scientists in the field and discussions with a hundred or more researchers with an interest in the topic. Colloquia presentations are recorded and posted on the National Academy of Sciences Sackler colloquia website and published on CD-ROM. These Colloquia are made possible by a generous gift from Mrs. Jill Sackler, in memory of her husband, Arthur M. Sackler.
