One of the charms of mathematics is the contrast between its generality and its applicability to concrete, even everyday, problems. Branching processes are typical in this. Their niche of mathematics is the abstract pattern of reproduction, sets of individuals changing size and composition through their members reproducing; in other words, what Plato might have called the pure idea behind demography, population biology, cell kinetics, molecular replication, or nuclear ?ssion, had he known these scienti?c ?elds. Even in the performance of algorithms for sorting and classi?cation there is an inkling of the same pattern. In special cases, general properties of the abstract ideal then interact with the physical or biological or whatever properties at hand. But the population, or bran- ing, pattern is strong; it tends to dominate, and here lies the reason for the extreme usefulness of branching processes in diverse applications. Branching is a clean and beautiful mathematical pattern, with an intellectually challenging intrinsic structure, and it pervades the phenomena it underlies.

Branching processes are stochastic processes which represent the reproduction of particles, such as individuals within a population, and thereby model demographic stochasticity. In branching processes in random environment (BPREs), additional environmental stochasticity is incorporated, meaning that the conditions of reproduction may vary in a random fashion from one generation to the next. This book offers an introduction to the basics of BPREs and then presents the cases of critical and subcritical processes in detail, the latter dividing into weakly, intermediate, and strongly subcritical regimes.

During the of Fall 1991, The Centre de Recerca Matematica, a research institute sponsored by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, devoted a quarter to the study of stochastic analysis. Prominent workers in this field visited the Center from all over the world for periods ranging from a few days to several weeks. To take advantage of the presence in Barcelona of so many special ists in stochastic analysis, we organized a workshop on the subject in Sant Feliu de Guixols (Girona) that provided an opportunity for them to ex change information and ideas about their current work. Topics discussed included: Analysis on the Wiener space, Anticipating Stochastic Calculus and its Applications, Correlation Inequalities, Stochastic Flows, Reflected Semimartingales, and others. This volume contains a refereed selection of contributions from some of the participants in this workshop. We are deeply indebted to the authors of the articles for these exposi tions of their valuable research contributions. We also would like to thank all the referees for their helpful advice in making the volume a reflection of the dynamic interchange that characterized the workshop. The success of the Seminar was due essentially to the enthusiasm and stimulating discus sions of all the participants in an informal and pleasant atmosphere. To all of them our warm gratitude.

Sergei Kuznetsov is one of the top experts on measure valued branching processes (also known as “superprocesses”) and their connection to nonlinear partial differential operators. His research interests range from stochastic processes and partial differential equations to mathematical statistics, time series analysis and statistical software; he has over 90 papers published in international research journals. His most well known contribution to probability theory is the "Kuznetsov-measure." A conference honoring his 60th birthday has been organized at Boulder, Colorado in the summer of 2010, with the participation of Sergei Kuznetsov’s mentor and major co-author, Eugene Dynkin. The conference focused on topics related to superprocesses, branching diffusions and nonlinear partial differential equations. In particular, connections to the so-called “Kuznetsov-measure” were emphasized. Leading experts in the field as well as young researchers contributed to the conference. The meeting was organized by J. Englander and B. Rider (U. of Colorado).
