Recently a symbiotic relationship between particle and nuclear physics has developed, with techniques and ideas from one field fertilizing developments in the other. This work outlines concepts from modern particle physics important to the current understanding of nuclear physics and reviews experiments involving nuclei which have influenced the present particle physics view of the weak interaction. In his discussion, the author summarizes both past and present activity in the field and identifies areas for future work. Familiarity with quantum mechanics is assumed in the presentation of ideas in this book intended for readers at the graduate level and beyond. A major goal of Weak Interactions in Nuclei is to encourage further activity at the intersection of particle and nuclear physics, two path-breaking areas of study in modern physics. Originally published in 1989. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Experimental evidenees for non vanishing neutrino masses are now very eon vincing. In the third English edition we have rewritten the paragraphs in which, in the previous edition the question of the neutrino mass has been left open. We have mueh appreciated the diseussions with Stephan Sehönert (Heidel berg) on the new results of the neutrino oseillations and their interpretations. We would like to thank Martin Lavelle (Plymouth) for the translation of the newly written paragraphs and Jürgen Sawinski (Heidelberg) for the exeellent work he has done in reformatting the book. Heidelberg, May 2002 Bogdan Povh Preface to the Second Edition The second English edition has been updated from the fifth edition of the original German text. The principal addition is a chapter on nuclear ther modynamics. We consider in this chapter the behaviour of nuclear matter at high temperature, how it may be studied in the laboratory, via heavy ion experiments and how it was of great importance in the initial stages of the universe. Such a phase of matter may be described and interpreted using the tools of thermodynamics. In this way a connection between particle and nuclear physics and the currently exciting research areas of cosmology and astrophysics may be constructed. We would like to thank Martin Lavelle (Plymouth) for the translation of the new chapter and for revising the old text and Jürgen Sawinski (Heidelberg) for the excellent work he has done in reformatting the book.

Sixty Years Of Double Beta Decay written by H. V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Science categories.
Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix OCo together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. This invaluable book outlines the development of double beta research from its beginnings until its most recent achievements, and also presents the outlook for its highly exciting future. Contents: Double Beta Decay OCo Historical Retrospective and Perspectives; Original Articles: From the Early Days until the Gauge Theory Era; The Nuclear Physics Side OCo Nuclear Matrix Elements; The Nuclear Physics Side OCo Nuclear Matrix Elements; Effective Neutrino Masses from Double Beta Decay, Neutrino Mass Models and Cosmological Parameters OCo Present Status and Prospects; Other Beyond Standard Model Physics: From SUSY and Leptoquarks to Compositeness and Quantum Foam; The Experimental Race: From the Late Eighties to the Future; The Future of Double Beta Decay; Appendices: Ten Years of HeidelbergOCoMoscow Experiment; The Potential Future OCo GENIUS. Readership: Particle physicists, nuclear physicists and astrophysicists."

Physics Of Atomic Nuclei written by Vladimir Zelevinsky and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-31 with Science categories.
This advanced textbook presents an extensive and diverse study of low-energy nuclear physics considering the nucleus as a quantum system of strongly interacting constituents. The contents guide students from the basic facts and ideas to more modern topics including important developments over the last 20 years, resulting in a comprehensive collection of major modern-day nuclear models otherwise unavailable in the current literature. The book emphasizes the common features of the nucleus and other many-body mesoscopic systems currently in the center of interest in physics. The authors have also included full problem sets that can be selected by lecturers and adjusted to specific interests for more advanced students, with many chapters containing links to freely available computer code. As a result, readers are equipped for scientific work in mesoscopic physics.

Parity Nonconservation In Atomic Phenomena written by Khriplovich and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-11-04 with Science categories.
Khriplovich (physics, Novosibirsk U., USSR) describes his own work and that of others in demonstrating the first decisive confirmations of the unified model of atomic electroweak interactions. The studies of weak interaction by optical methods, at the boundary between elementary particle physics and atomic spectroscopy, have revealed parity nonconservation in atomic transitions. He considers the effects of space-inversion and time-reversal violations in atoms, molecules, and condensed matter. First published in Russian in 1981, and translated from the 1988 second edition.
