The Internet and World Wide Web have revolutionized access to information. Users now store information across multiple platforms from personal computers to smartphones and websites. As a consequence, data management concepts, methods and techniques are increasingly focused on distribution concerns. Now that information largely resides in the network, so do the tools that process this information. This book explains the foundations of XML with a focus on data distribution. It covers the many facets of distributed data management on the Web, such as description logics, that are already emerging in today's data integration applications and herald tomorrow's semantic Web. It also introduces the machinery used to manipulate the unprecedented amount of data collected on the Web. Several 'Putting into Practice' chapters describe detailed practical applications of the technologies and techniques. The book will serve as an introduction to the new, global, information systems for Web professionals and master's level courses.

The unprecedented scale at which data is both produced and consumed today has generated a large demand for scalable data management solutions facilitating fast access from all over the world. As one consequence, a plethora of non-relational, distributed NoSQL database systems have risen in recent years and today’s data management system landscape has thus become somewhat hard to overlook. As another consequence, complex polyglot designs and elaborate schemes for data distribution and delivery have become the norm for building applications that connect users and organizations across the globe – but choosing the right combination of systems for a given use case has become increasingly difficult as well. To help practitioners stay on top of that challenge, this book presents a comprehensive overview and classification of the current system landscape in cloud data management as well as a survey of the state-of-the-art approaches for efficient data distribution and delivery to end-user devices. The topics covered thus range from NoSQL storage systems and polyglot architectures (backend) over distributed transactions and Web caching (network) to data access and rendering performance in the client (end-user). By distinguishing popular data management systems by data model, consistency guarantees, and other dimensions of interest, this book provides an abstract framework for reasoning about the overall design space and the individual positions claimed by each of the systems therein. Building on this classification, this book further presents an application-driven decision guidance tool that breaks the process of choosing a set of viable system candidates for a given application scenario down into a straightforward decision tree.

There is now so much data on the Web that managing it with conventional tools is becoming almost impossible. To manage this data, provide interoperability and warehousing between multiple data sources and systems, and extract information from the databases and warehouses, various tools are being developed. In fact, developments in multimedia database management have exploded during the past decade. To date, however, there has been little information available on providing a complete set of services for multimedia databases, including their management, mining, and integration on the Web for electronic enterprises. Managing and Mining Multimedia Databases fills that gap. Focusing on managing and mining multimedia databases for electronic commerce and business, it explores database management system techniques for text, image, audio, and video databases. It addresses the issues and challenges of mining multimedia databases to extract information, and discusses the directions and challenges related to integrating multimedia databases for the Web, particularly for e-business. This book provides a comprehensive overview of multimedia data management and mining technologies, from the underlying concepts, architectures, and data models for multimedia database systems to the technologies that support multimedia data management on the Web, privacy issues, and emerging standards, prototypes, and products. Designed for technical managers, executives, and technologists, it offers your only opportunity to learn about both multimedia data management and multimedia data mining within a single book.

The Routledge Companion to Transnational Web Archive Studies explores the untapped potential of web archives for researching transnational digital history and communication. It covers cross- border, cross- collection, and cross- institutional examination of web archives on a global scale. This comprehensive collaborative work, emerging from the WARCnet research network, presents an exploration of the ways web archive research can transcend technological and legal challenges to allow for new comparative, transnational studies of the web’s pasts, and of global events. By combining interdisciplinary work and fostering collaboration between web archivists and researchers, the book provides readers with cutting- edge approaches to analyzing digital cultural heritage across countries. The book contains concrete examples on how to research national web domains through a transnational perspective; provides case studies with grounded explorations of the COVID- 19 crisis as a distinctly transnational event captured by web archives; offers methodological considerations while unpacking techniques and skill sets for conducting transnational web archive research; and critically engages the politics and power dynamics inherent to web archives as institutionalised collections. The Routledge Companion to Transnational Web Archive Studies is an essential read for graduate students and scholars from internet and media studies, cultural studies, history, and digital humanities. It will also appeal to web archiving practitioners, including librarians, web curators, and IT developers.

Simulation and molding are efficient techniques that can aid the city and regional planners and engineers in optimizing the operation of urban systems such as traffic light control, highway toll automation, consensus building, public safety, and environmental protection. When modeling transportation systems such as freeway systems, arterial or downtown grid systems, the city planner and engineer is concerned with capturing the varied interactions between drivers, automobiles, and the infrastructure. Modeling and simulation are used to effectively optimize the design and operation of all of these urban systems. It is possible that in an urban simulation community workshop, citizens can work interactively in front of computers and be able using the click of the mouse to walk up to their own front porch, looking at the proposed shopping mall alternatives across the street from virtually any angle and proposed bridge or tunnel and see how it can reduce traffic congestion. Buildings can be scaled down or taken out, their orientation can be changed in order to check the view and orientation in order to have better site with efficient energy-conservation. The stone or brick material on a building can be replaced by colored concrete, or more trees and lampposts can be placed on the site. Such flexibility in simulation and animation allows creative ideas in the design and orientation of urban sites to be demonstrated to citizens and decision makers before final realization.
