By using the same back-end macro programming language, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Microsoft Office applications allow users to easily transfer their VBA programming skills from one Office product to another. A developer skilled at using VBA to program Access can quickly learn to program Word or Excel. Better still, VBA is a fairly complete subset of Visual Basic (VB). That means a VB developer already knows how to use VBA, and a VBA programmer knows a lot about VB. Author Rod Stephens gives you the most valuable information possible as quickly as possible without rehashing the trivial VB and VBA details you already can recite in your sleep. In Microsoft Office Programming: A Guide for Experienced Developers, Stephens skips the tiresome explanations of variable declarations and dives right into serious Office programming topics, such as automatically customizing menus and toolbars with VBA, making Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) do your work for you, and using ADO to manipulate data in an Access database.

In today's rapidly changing technological world, it is increasingly important that web and desktop applications be accessible to everyone, including those of us with special needs. However, the legal requirements for accessibility are often convoluted and diffucult to understand, making it impossible for most developers to comply with the laws. In the first book on the market to address the topic, Author John Paul Mueller leads you through the maze of Section 508—the congressional law ensuring that all Americans have access to information technology—and offers comprehensive guidance on how to quickly and easily update your applications to conform to Section 508 requirements. To begin, Mueller outlines the Section 508 requirements that are relevant to web and desktop application developers, and explains the laws in language you can understand. Using extensive and varied program examples, Mueller continues on to teach you to write web and desktop applications that not only conform to Section 508 standards, but look forward to ensure long-term universal accessibility for all types of computer users. Specific topics include writing accessible web applications and desktop applications using Visual Basic .NET and Visual C# .NET, developing special application capabilities, using Microsoft and other third-party tools to develop accessible features, developing accessible scripting solutions, and more. The book even includes a directory of helpful organizations, agencies, and resources to help you with any further accessibility concerns you may have.

ASP.NET MAKES IT EASY to create intemctive and intuitive interfaces for Web applica tions, and attmctive and exciting Web pages. The server-based postback architecture, combined with the comprehensive army of server controls that are provided as part of the .NET Framework, allow developers to quickly build browser-based interfaces for Web sites and Web applications-using much the same event -driven approach as in "tmdi tional" executable programs developed in languages like VISual Basic, Delphi, and C++. This is a completely new and different way of working from previous versions of ASP, and the underlying principles and workings of server-based events, which occur in response to actions made by the user in the page, can prove to be difficult to gmsp in their entirety. However, constructing ASP.NET pages, especially with some of the tools that are available or under development now, is very much easier and often less error-prone than in classic ASP. Besides, a completely server-based approach to user interaction does have its downsides. In high-latency scenarios, or over slow network connections, the need to hit the server every time the page content needs to be modified can intrude on the workings of an application or reduce the perceived responsiveness of a Web site.
