Tim O’Toole and his wife, Kathleen, are so poor they have not a penny or a potato between them. Even their cats are too skinny for the mice to chase! When Tim goes out to find a job, he stumbles upon “the wee folk”—a band of leprechauns who give him gifts to make his fortune. That is, if Tim can keep clear of the evil McGoon family. . . . “The telling here has a well-honed, Irish lilt; the illustrations, by a Caldecott winner, are lively, expressive, and well sprinkled with sprightly men in green.”—Kirkus Reviews “This book is a winner.”—Booklist

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 1979 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Nations, , language: English, abstract: The word "Ireland" conjures up various images in the mind's eye: scenic countryside, a leisurely way of life, the inevitable lush green grass. Another aspect of Ireland, however, evident even to the most casual visitor, is the widespread and sincere belief in all supernatural beings. Not only do the Irish follow their religion with fervour, they are equally enthusiastic in their attitude to those other non- humans, the "little people". Through examination of Irish fairy figures, the chief sources of information about them (namely, the folk and fairy tales recorded from oral tradition), and modern evidence regarding attitudes to the fairy folk, and through comparison of these aspects with their counter parts in Europe and elsewhere, I shall attempt in this paper to offer some information about the little people of Ireland , and through this, to discover why the Irish, unlike other European nations, whose belief in their own fairy cultures has been subject to "enlightened" attitudes, have maintained a healthy respect of, and affection for, the "wee folk".

Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry "Up the airy mountain, Down the rushy glen, We daren't go a-hunting For fear of little men; Wee folk, good folk, Trooping all together; Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather!Down along the rocky shore Some make their home, They live on crispy pancakes Of yellow tide-foam; Some in the reeds Of the black mountain lake, With frogs for their watch-dogs All night awake.High on the hill-top The old King sits; He is now so old and gray He's nigh lost his wits. With a bridge of white mist Columbkill he crosses, On his stately journeys From Slieveleague to Rosses; Or going up with music On cold starry nights, To sup with the Queen Of the gay Northern Lights." Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry has a beautiful glossy cover and a blank page for the dedication.

Stories are something you carry with you, something to last your entire life, to be passed on to your children, and their children for evermore.' Duncan Williamson came from a family of Travelling People, who told stories around the campfire for entertainment and for teaching. As a child, Duncan learnt the ways of the world through stories: 'My father's knowledge told us how to live in this world as natural human beings -- not to be greedy, not to be foolish, not to be daft or selfish -- by stories.' In this collection, he passes on some of these wonderful children's folk and fairy tales. For over sixty years Duncan travelled around Scotland -- on foot, then in a horse and cart, and later an old van -- collecting tales, which not only come from the Travelling People but from the crofters, farmers and shepherds he met along the way. This collection includes tales about cunning foxes and storytelling cats, hunchbacked ogres and beautiful unicorns, helpful broonies and mysterious fairies, rich kings and fearsome warriors, as well as those about ordinary folk trying to make their way in the world. The stories have been written down as faithfully as possible to Duncan's unique storytelling voice, full of colour, humour and life.
