Welcome to Pawnee: First in Friendship, Fourth in Obesity. Let Leslie Knope (as played by Amy Poehler on NBC's hit show Parks and Recreation) take you on a hilarious tour through her hometown, the Midwestern haven known as Pawnee, Indiana. Meet the city's colorful citizens, like much-loved public servant and man of nature Ron Swanson; learn about industrial giants such as Sweetums and the Kernston's Rubber Nipple factory; and explore hopping nightlife venues such as the Snake Hole, or indulge in the greatest waffles in the world at JJ's Diner (specialty meal: The Four Horse-Meals of the Egg-Pork-alypse). The book also delves into Pawnee's rich and varied history, including the time the whole town was on fire, or when that cult that took over in the 1970s, and how we overcame decades of conflict with (and some unfortunate massacres of) the Wamapoke Indians to live in harmony. Everything's definitely totally cool with them now. Packed with laugh-out-loud photographs, illustrations, and commentary by all the characters from the show, Pawnee is a must-read that will make you enjoy every moment of your stay in the Greatest Town in America.

A story about baseball, family, the American Dream, and the fight to turn Los Angeles into a big league city. Dodger Stadium is an American icon. But the story of how it came to be goes far beyond baseball. The hills that cradle the stadium were once home to three vibrant Mexican American communities. In the early 1950s, those communities were condemned to make way for a utopian public housing project. Then, in a remarkable turn, public housing in the city was defeated amidst a Red Scare conspiracy. Instead of getting their homes back, the remaining residents saw the city sell their land to Walter O'Malley, the owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Now LA would be getting a different sort of utopian fantasy -- a glittering, ultra-modern stadium. But before Dodger Stadium could be built, the city would have to face down the neighborhood's families -- including one, the Aréchigas, who refused to yield their home. The ensuing confrontation captivated the nation - and the divisive outcome still echoes through Los Angeles today.

Welcome To The Oglala Nation written by Akim D. Reinhardt and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-01 with Social Science categories.

Popular culture largely perceives the tragedy at Wounded Knee in 1890 as the end of Native American resistance in the West, and for many years historians viewed this event as the end of Indian history altogether. The Dawes Act of 1887 and the reservation system dramatically changed daily life and political dynamics, particularly for the Oglala Lakotas. As Akim D. Reinhardt demonstrates in this volume, however, the twentieth century continued to be politically dynamic. Even today, as life continues for the Oglalas on the Pine Ridge Reservation in southwestern South Dakota, politics remain an integral component of the Lakota past and future. Reinhardt charts the political history of the Oglala Lakota people from the fifteenth century to the present with this edited collection of primary documents, a historical narrative, and a contemporary bibliographic essay. Throughout the twentieth century, residents on Pine Ridge and other reservations confronted, resisted, and adapted to the continuing effects of U.S. colonialism. During the modern reservation era, reservation councils, grassroots and national political movements, courtroom victories and losses, and cultural battles have shaped indigenous populations. Both a documentary reader and a Lakota history, Welcome to the Oglala Nation is an indispensable volume on Lakota politics.

A groundbreaking manifesto from journalist Gretchen Carlson about how women can protect themselves from sexual harassment in the workplace and reclaim their power against abuse or injustice. In BE FIERCE, Gretchen shares her own experiences, as well as powerful and moving stories from women in many different careers and fields who decided they too weren't ready to shut up and sit down. Gretchen became a voice for the voiceless. In this revealing and timely book, Gretchen shares her views on what women can do to empower and protect themselves in the workplace or on a college campus, what to say when someone makes suggestive remarks, how an employer's Human Resources department may not always be your friend, and how forced arbitration clauses in work contracts often serve to protect companies rather than employees. Her groundbreaking message encourages women to stand up and speak up in every aspect of their lives. Gretchen also discusses why this fight will require both women and men working together to ensure that our daughters and sons will have a brighter future. BE FIERCE is a cultural movement and a motivating testament to what we can accomplish if we collectively decide to become warriors in the path for a better future. The time is now. Take back your life, your career, and your dignity.
