Fascinerend onderzoek dat het vreemdelingenbeleid vroeger en vandaag kadert In de negentiende eeuw bloeide de haven van Antwerpen en dat leidde tot een groeiende aantrekkingskracht op zowel internationale immigranten alsook werkmigranten uit andere hoeken van het land. In dit boek wordt onderzocht hoe de stad Antwerpen omging met buitenlandse nieuwkomers in een periode waarin niet enkel het aantal migratiebewegingen steeg, maar waarin ook de inmenging van de centrale staat alsmaar toenam. Na de onafhankelijkheid van België was de medewerking van de lokale bestuursniveaus aan het vreemdelingenbeleid geen evidentie: de meeste steden in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden hadden van oudsher een sterke traditie van politieke autonomie opgebouwd. Deze studie toont aan hoe de prioriteiten van het stedelijke vreemdelingenbeleid verschilden van die van de nationale staat, en hoe de stad het beleid ten aanzien van buitenlandse nieuwkomers soms bewust selectief toepaste. Het zijn tendens en die ook in de eenentwintigste eeuw nog actueel zijn en die het vreemdelingenbeleid - zowel vroeger als vandaag - vorm geven.

Het jaarboek HistoriANT bundelt vlot leesbare, wetenschappelijke artikelen over de rijke geschiedenis van de stad Antwerpen. Dit jubileumnummer start met een overzicht van de grote tendensen van het historisch onderzoek over Antwerpen en met een chronologische lijst van alle verschenen artikels. Daarna volgt een boeiende reeks artikels, beginnend met de oudste stadsprivileges van Antwerpen. Achthonderd jaar geleden ontving Antwerpen van de Brabantse hertog Hendrik I twee oorkonden; deze charters worden zorgvuldig geanalyseerd. Dan maakt de lezer een vlucht in de tijd naar het midden van de zeventiende eeuw wanneer Balthasar Moretus II 57 drukken uit zijn Plantijnse persen aan de stad Antwerpen schonk. En dan een sprong naar het bijzondere voormalige veilinghuis Van Herck: vier generaties die de kunstwereld in Antwerpen vanaf 1860 mee beheersten gedurende honderddertig jaar. Het themadossier bundelt artikels over de haven van Antwerpen en Congo, in de negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw. In de jaren 1930 was Congolees hout erg in trek in de modernistische interieurs. De nieuw ontdekte houtsoorten kwamen in grote vrachten per boot in Antwerpen toe. Een ander aspect is dat van de wervers of informele tussenpersonen die de arbeidsmarkt van de matrozen controleerden. Drie kronieken betreffen het onderzoek van prof. dr. Mathieu Zana Etambala over de Société Anversoise du Commerce au Congo, de herdenkingsmonumenten van koloniale beroemdheden in Antwerpen en het bronnenmateriaal over de koloniale periode in het FelixArchief/Stadsarchief.

Media matter, particularly to social minorities like lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. Rather than one homogenised idea of the ‘global gay’, what we find today is a range of historically and culturally specific expressions of gender and sexuality, which are reflected and explored across an ever increasing range of media outlets. This collection zooms in on a number of facets of this kaleidoscope, each chapter discussing the intersection of a particular European context and a particular medium with its affordances and limitations. While traditional mass media form the starting point of this book, the primary focus is on digital media such as blogs, social media and online dating sites. All contributions are based on recent, original empirical research, using a plethora of qualitative methods to offer a holistic view on the ways media matter to particular LGBTQ individuals and communities. Together the chapters cover the diversity of European countries and regions, of LGBTQ communities, and of the contemporary media ecology. Resisting the urge to extrapolate, they argue for specificity, contextualisation and a provincialized understanding of the connections between media, culture, gender and sexuality.
