Diese humorvoll intendierte Aussage, die vor einiger Zeit so oder ähnlich einmal zu lesen war, illustriert anschaulich die Wahrnehmung eines globalen funktionalen Zusammenhanges, die - wenngleich in der Zuweisung von Funktionen zu Kontinenten provokativ übertrieben - empirisch in abgewandelter Form zunächst nicht völlig unberechtigt scheint. Global nachweisbare Funktions- und Vernetzungszusammenhänge können mehr oder minder umkommentiert angenommen werden, sind aber letztendlich für die systemtheoretische Betrachtung irrelevant. Vielmehr steht die Frage im Mittelpunkt, inwieweit der Begriff einer Weltgesellschaft genutzt werden kann und inwiefern es sinnvoll ist, von einer Weltgesellschaft zu sprechen. Als Referenz dient hierbei die systemtheoretische Betrachtung von Niklas Luhmann. Um zu erklären, was Luhmann mit dem Begriff der Weltgesellschaft meint, ist es unerlässlich, anhand von kurzen Einschüben die wesentlichen Grundbegriffe einzuführen, mit denen Luhmann in seiner allgemeinen Theorie der sozialen Systeme operiert. Die Arbeit widmet sich einem Komplex von Fragen gleicher Zielrichtung, nämlich inwiefern Luhmanns Konzeption von Weltgesellschaft ein begrifflich konsistentes Instrumentarium zur Wirklichkeitsbeschreibung liefert und wieweit dessen Anspruch auf universelle Plausibilität reichen kann. Meist wird durch sie das Wegfallen der nationalstaatlichen Grenzen (insbesondere für den Waren- und Finanzverkehr) oder eine weltweite Vernetzung durch neue Kommunikationsmedien beschrieben. Kein Tag vergeht ohne mediale Präsenz von globalen Herausforderungen, globalen Katastrophen oder globalen Entwicklungen. Durch Thesen, die eine Zuspitzung dieser Tendenzen prognostizieren, erhalten neue Begriffe wie Weltstaat, Weltgesellschaft und Weltsystem Einzug in die politischen und wissenschaftlichen Debatten. In der politischen Wissenschaft beschäftigt man sich ausführlich mit supranationalem Steuern und Kooperation, die zwischenstaatlich fokussierte Disziplin der "Internationalen Beziehungen" weicht dem überstaatlichen Global Governance-Begriff; die Sozialwissenschaft tut sich jedoch schwer, die welteinheitliche Perspektive zu wählen und sich effektiv ins neue Glanzthema einzubringen. This book provides an insight into the ideas of one of the world’s greatest sociologists: Niklas Luhmann. It explains, in clear and concise language, the basic concepts of Social Systems Theory and their application to the specific case of the Education System, which was considered by Luhmann as a primary subsystem of modern society.
