Die Ideologie öffentlicher Räume impliziert, dass diese allen zugänglich sind. Inwiefern ist das jedoch Realität? Das Werk „Wem gehört die Stadt – Ausgrenzungsstrategien in öffentlichen Räumen“ stellt verschiedene soziologische, stadtgeographische und kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze zu Dominanzverhältnissen und Ausgrenzungsstrategien im öffentlichen Raum vor. Ausgehend von den vielfältigen Definitionen öffentlicher Räume, widmet sich die Arbeit den Mechanismen, Strukturen und Instrumenten, die zur Ausgrenzung von Individuen und Gruppen im öffentlichen Raum führen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der Frage, wer über Ausschluss entscheiden darf und wer im Gegenzug ausgeschlossen wird. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Rolle von Staat (institutionell), Wirtschaft (ökonomisch) sowie der Gesellschaft (sozial) eingegangen. Diese interdisziplinäre Herangehensweise ermöglicht einen Überblick über die zahlreichen Forschungsergebnisse der letzten Jahrzehnte und liefert zusammenfassende Ergebnisse zu Ausgrenzungsstrategien im öffentlichen Raum.

Große Hierarchien in Einkommen und Befehlsstrukturen verringern das Selbstwertgefühl, die Achtung und den Respekt in Gesellschaften. Wir berichten von Gewalt in Fabriken, Büros, Schulen, in Betreuungseinrichtungen der sozialen Arbeit, Universitäten, im städtischen Bestattungswesen, Krankenhäusern, in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, von Frauen in der Katholischen Kirche, bei der Verleihung von Staatsbürgerschaften und aus dem Leben einer Transgender-Person. Gesellschaften, die geringe Hierarchien leben, sind gesünder und weisen eine größere Vielfalt von Lebensweisen auf. Eine stärkere Abwechslung von Regierenden und jenen, die sich regieren lassen, könnten wir beispielsweise durch den stärken Einsatz von Rotation und Losprozessen in Gesellschaften erreichen.
