Die wichtigen Wendepunkte in der Fremdsprachendidaktik und in der Fremdsprachenlehr- und -lernforschung lassen sich auf verschiedenen Ebenen beobachten. In dem Sammelband werden sowohl explizite als auch implizite Wendepunkte dargestellt. Im Mittelpunkt der Beiträge stehen Veränderungen in den Methoden des Fremdsprachenunterrichts, in der Auffassung und in den Förderungsmöglichkeiten verschiedener fremdsprachlicher Kompetenzen sowie in der Konzeptualisierung der (produktiven) Sprachfertigkeiten und in der Arbeit an ihnen. Den Gegenstand der Analyse bildet auch der Wandel in der Sprachbildung, d. h. in den Inhalten des Fremdsprachenunterrichts und in den Wegen zur Schulung und Entwicklung verschiedener Sprachfertigkeiten und Kompetenzen. Ebenso werden die Veränderungsprozesse in der Rolle, in den Funktionen und in der Ausbildung von Fremdsprachenlehrkräften besprochen. The important turning points in foreign language teaching and learning methodology and research can be observed at different levels. In this volume, both explicit and implicit turning points are presented. The contributions focus on the changes in the methods of foreign language teaching, on some theoretical shifts, on the ways of promoting different foreign language competencies, as well as on the conceptualization of (productive) language skills and the ways of developing them. The collected contributions analyze the shifts in language education, that is in the content of foreign language teaching and in the ways of developing different language skills and competencies. The volume also discusses the evolutions in the role, functions, and training of language teachers.

Der Begriff »Wende« wird in der Literaturwissenschaft hauptsächlich in Bezug auf die Literatur der gesellschaftspolitischen Wende von 1989/90 sowie auf die sogenannten »turns« wie z. B. iconic turn, spatial turn, interpretative turn, performative turn oder cultural turn gebraucht. Diese zwei Wende-Erscheinungen determinieren den literaturwissenschaftlichen Diskurs seit etwa vierzig Jahren. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen über die etablierte Semantik von »Wende« hinaus. Ein breiter Bogen wird gespannt von der Wende im Sinne einer Zeitenwende als Aufbruch und Neuorientierung oder Dystopie über die Wende als rhetorischer, künstlerischer oder medialer Entwurf, kollektives Erlebnis oder individualpsychologische Erfahrung bis hin zu weltanschaulichen, biographischen, politischen und existenziellen Wenden und schließlich auch einer Wende als narrative Struktur. In literary studies, the term "Wende" is mainly used in relation to the literature of the socio-political change in Germany of 1989/90 and to the so-called "turns", such as the iconic turn, spatial turn, interpretative turn, performative turn or cultural turn. These two generic terms have determined the discourse in literary studies for more or less forty years. However, the contributions in this volume go beyond the established semantics of the turn. The focus is on turning-point phenomena and perceptions that – in the sense of a turning point – promised a new beginning and a new orientation. To what extent the historical, social, cultural and political turning points influenced literature in terms of content and form and what effects they had on the creation and reception of literature and culture – these are the central questions of this volume.

While it is assumed that American undergraduates who study abroad derive unique benefits from the experience, until now its actual impact has not been assessed. This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. This analysis will be relevant for educational decision-makers, funding organizations, government, and the research community.
