The Wendigo doesn't like to share his woods with anyone and just wants to be alone. But what can he do when a man is too injured to leave? The unsavory legend of the Wendigo has its roots in Native American lore and has since found its way into various forms of literature and popular culture, from classic "weird horror" to modern TV programming to campfire stories. The story of the Wendigo has certainly made itself at home in the tales of writers and storytellers for generations. Now the Wendigo finds a new home in children's literature. Our curmudgeonly main characters wants nothing more than be left alone in his woods but begrudgingly has to share them with other creatures both real and magical. But he refues to share the woods with people and when the Wendigo discovers a man too injured to be scared way, he must do whatever it takes to make him leave. Even if it means helping him get better. There are strange things in the Wendigos' woods and who knows where he'll have to go to help this man, but the Wendigo is clever and sneaky, I'm sure he'll figure it out.

In the morning the camp was astir before the sun. There had been a light fall of snow during the night and the air was sharp. Punk had done his duty betimes, for the odors of coffee and fried bacon reached every tent. All were in good spirits. "Wind's shifted!" cried Hank vigorously, watching Simpson and his guide already loading the small canoe. "It's across the lake—dead right for you fellers. And the snow'll make bully trails! If there's any moose mussing around up thar, they'll not get so much as a tail-end scent of you with the wind as it is. Good luck, Monsieur Défago!" he added, facetiously giving the name its French pronunciation for once, "bonne chance!" Défago returned the good wishes, apparently in the best of spirits, the silent mood gone. Before eight o'clock old Punk had the camp to himself, Cathcart and Hank were far along the trail that led westwards, while the canoe that carried Défago and Simpson, with silk tent and grub for two days, was already a dark speck bobbing on the bosom of the lake, going due east. The wintry sharpness of the air was tempered now by a sun that topped the wooded ridges and blazed with a luxurious warmth upon the world of lake and forest below; loons flew skimming through the sparkling spray that the wind lifted; divers shook their dripping heads to the sun and popped smartly out of sight again; and as far as eye could reach rose the leagues of endless, crowding Bush, desolate in its lonely sweep and grandeur, untrodden by foot of man, and stretching its mighty and unbroken carpet right up to the frozen shores of Hudson Bay....

The Wendigo - Algernon Blackwood - 1910 - CLASSIC HORROR - A Wendigo (also known as windigo, weendigo, windago, windiga, witiko, wihtikow, and numerous other variants including manaha) is a half-beast creature appearing in the legends of the Algonquian peoples along the Atlantic Coast and Great Lakes Region of both the United States and Canada. The creature or spirit could either possess characteristics of a human or a monster that had physically transformed from a person. It is particularly associated with cannibalism. The Algonquian believed those who indulged in eating human flesh were at particular risk; the legend appears to have reinforced the taboo of the practice of cannibalism. It is often described in Algonquian mythology as a balance of nature. The legend lends its name to the disputed modern medical term Wendigo psychosis. This is supposed to be a culture-bound disorder that features symptoms such as an intense craving for human flesh and a fear the sufferer is a cannibal. This condition was alleged to have occurred among Algonquian native cultures, but remains disputed. The Wendigo legend has inspired a number of derived characters commonly found in modern horror fiction.

For centuries, indigenous tribes across North America have passed down stories of the Wendigo - a creature and spirit born of hunger and desperation, a presence that dwells in the darkest corners of the North American forests. But what exactly is the Wendigo? Is it merely a creature of folklore, a cautionary tale against the depths of human depravity? Or does it lurk, even now, in the remote and frozen expanses of the northern forests, waiting for the right moment to present itself? In Wendigo: The Madness Spirit, I promise to take you on a journey of curiosity and discovery beyond the surface of this chilling legend, peeling back the layers of myth and history to reveal the secrets around the Wendigo. Together, we would explore the intricate web of indigenous folklore, all the different narratives and elements that thicken that web in a bid to understand, even if it is just a little bit more, the unique beliefs and traditions of Native American folklore. Our journey takes us through different perspectives such as the influence of the early Christian missionaries in helping to preserve tales of Native American legends such as the Wendigo and the scientific and psychological undertones that render themselves to these narratives. We encounter the eerie phenomenon of Wendigo Psychosis, where the fear of becoming a Wendigo drives individuals to the brink of madness. As we delve into the psychological and cultural nuances that make the Wendigo legend more than just a ghost story, we will come to a realization together. The Wendigo is a reflection of the intricate relationship between belief, culture, and the human psyche and when it comes to these things, no single answer ever suffices. Throughout Wendigo: The Madness Spirit we encounter the voices of indigenous communities who have lived in harmony with the land and its legends for generations without the interference of the white man. We hear their stories of encounters with the Wendigo, their cautionary tales, and their insights into the enduring power of this legend. We also touch upon modern interpretations of the legend as Christianity and popular culture make their own contributions to the web of stories that make up this book. And finally, we will understand how the legend of the Wendigo continues to shape our understanding of the world and ourselves. But before we get there......
