So beschreibt Albrecht von Eyb zum Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts die im Alter auftretenden Gebrechen. Seine Einschätzung steht stellvertretend für die im ausgehenden Mittelalter weitläufige Geringschätzung alter Menschen. Nichts mehr ist von dem tapferen, kraftvollen und selbstbewussten Greis, wie ihn Cicero in seiner Schrift Cato, major de senecture beschreibt, übrig. Das in der Antike als Krönung des Lebens verstandene Bild des würdevollen und weisen Greises verschwindet zu Beginn der frühen Neuzeit. Nur in wenigen Ausnahmefällen wird der alte Mensch wegen seiner früheren erbrachten Leistungen, die in einem harten und ertragsreichen Leben erreicht worden sind, geschätzt. Übrig bleibt meist nur der mit dem Makel des Zerfalls behaftete alte Mensch, welcher den Angehörigen nur zur Last zu fallen scheint und dessen baldiges Ableben sehnlichst erwartet wird. Wie ist die Geringschätzung alter Menschen zu erklären? Was sind dessen Ursachen? Wie wurde der Alterungsprozess im Mittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit gesellschaftlich bewertet? Inwieweit wird diese Sichtweise durch religiös-philosophische oder aber medizinische Vorstellungen beeinflusst? Wie erklärt die zeitgenössische Wissenschaft den Alterungsprozess? Welche Maßnahmen wirken dem körperlichen Verfall entgegen? Diese und weitere Fragen sollen nun hier ausgeleuchtet und geklärt werden. Im ersten Teil werde ich dazu die im Mittelalter und der frühen Neuzeit gängigen Lebensverlaufsmodelle vorstellen.
