Wertkonflikte wie der Konflikt um die Regelung des Schwangerschaftsabbruches bilden eine besondere Herausforderung demokratischer Politik. Auf der Basis einer systematischen Rekonstruktion existierender Ansätze und Theorien unterbreitet die vorliegende Arbeit zunächst einen Vorschlag zur Bestimmung der Logik und Dynamik von Wertkonflikten. In einem zweiten Schritt werden die empirischen Befunde zur Leistungsfähigkeit konventioneller und alternativer Verfahren demokratischer Konfliktregelung hinsichtlich der Zivilisierung oder Lösung von Wertkonflikten analysiert. Hier wird gezeigt, dass entgegen vorherrschenden Einschätzungen spezifische Arten von Kompromissen durchaus geeignet sind, den Kern einer Strategie der Zivilisierung von Wertkonflikten zu bilden. Der dritte Teil widmet sich der Frage nach der politischen Ordnung moralisch pluraler Gesellschaften. Die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem liberalen politiktheoretischen Modell für den Umgang mit Wertkonflikten mündet in das Plädoyer, die politische Ordnung moralisch pluraler Gesellschaften an der Idee eines modus vivendi zu orientieren.
