Urbanization And Social Change In West Africa written by Josef Gugler and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978-07-28 with Social Science categories.

Originally published in 1978 as part of the Urbanization in Developing Countries series, this is an interdisciplinary study of rapid urban growth in West Africa. Gugler and Flanagan first explore the history of the cities of the early West African empires and they draw on the work of social anthropologists and sociologists, as well as demographers, economists, geographers, historians, political scientists and social psychologists. They then describe the urban explosion that the region experienced after World War II. They explore the implications of widespread urban unemployment and underemployment, the housing crisis and the emergence of metropolitan areas such as Lagos. The literature on urbanization and social change in Black Africa in general, and West Africa in particular, expanded at a fast pace in the years preceding publication. This critical review of the disparate findings filled a gap in African Studies and threw light on the understanding of Third World urbanization.

This volume surveys archaeological data from West Africa, examining sites from the Senegambia to the Cameroon. The focus is on the archaeological record of the past 500 years, a period that witnessed dramatic transformations in African political and social systems, as well as the consequences of European expansion, the advent of the Atlantic slave trave, and the expansion of Islamic polities in the West African Sahel. While historians have examined many aspects of this period, the written record provides only limited insight into the history and development of many areas. Archaeology has the potential to provide unique information not accessible through documentary records or oral traditions. Thus, the material record offers the most valuable means of evaluating both change and continuity in African societies over the past 500 years. The geographical and topical scope of this volume is extremely timely. Historical archaeology, particularly aspects dealing with European interactions with indigenous populations, is an area that has received increasing attention over the past decade. There has also been a growing interest in studies of Africa and the African diaspora. This volume, the first to draw together archaeological syntheses of various parts of West Africa, will be an important resource for West Africanists and all researchers interested in the indigenous response to European expansion, as well as for those examining African continuitites in the Americas.>

From its ancient kingdoms to the independent post-colonial states that make up the region today, western Africa has transformed dramatically over the centuries. Economically lucrative for European slave traders and later for their colonial successors, the territories along Africa’s Atlantic coast were forced to overcome great adversity before achieving autonomy. This volume surveys the history of the many nations of western Africa where vestiges of its celebrated past are still visible in cities like Timbuktu and where its diverse peoples continue to navigate a path towards a more stable future.
