"How can you be a West Point graduate and a Navy admiral?" Mike Shelton has been asked that question many times throughout his life! Indeed, when Cadet Michael Shelton began his Plebe year at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1963, he had no idea that four decades later he would retire from military service as a Rear Admiral in the US Navy. In West Point Admiral: Leadership Lessons from Four Decades of Military Service, Shelton outlines his military career beginning with West Point, the war in Vietnam, and through postings across the globe. Along the way, he witnessed firsthand the traits of good leadership--and bad--as he rose steadily through the ranks. Shelton provides his candid perspective on how the military has evolved through the years and the differences between Army/Navy philosophies, all while telling the story of his life in the service and his beloved US Navy Seabees.

I do not claim that my book, as widely as it was thus distributed, was the cause of the awakening of the Government and of the country to the wisdom of raising the army of several millions of men which the war demanded, by conscription. But I fancy that I have the right to think that it was one of the moving causes to such Wisdom of action. Excerpt from West Point in Our Next War: The Only Way to Create and Maintain an Army I am the son of an officer of the navy, a Regular of Regulars, and I had the honour to serve in the Volunteer Army of the United States during the War of the Rebellion. My Father was a consistent advocate of a large and powerful navy. As a youth I met and knew many officers of the two services, friends of my Father, many of whom distinguished themselves in the army and navy of the United States, and in the service of the South, during the great war. My Father's loyalty was of the sacred kind, which made his devotion to his country a part of his religion. Admiral Ammen, writing to me several years after the war, speaking of my Father, said, "His gallantry was unquestioned by all who knew him." Reared under such auspices, associated from my earliest days up to the period of his untimely death with so noble a character as my Father, it would have been impossible for me not to have assimilated as my own some of his feelings and beliefs as to the service, and as to the officers of the army and navy, his associates and comrades. Sir Charles Cotton served in the Royal Navy from 1772 to 1812. Unfortunately timing precluded his presence at Trafalgar, but he participated in other pivotal battles, including The Saintes and The Glorious First of June. His career culminated with command of a squadron based off Lisbon, Portugal, followed by commands of the prestigious Mediterranean and Channel Fleets. Each of these commands notably influenced the Peninsular War. This study helps to answer one of the most frequently asked questions about this era: How did British naval power contribute to the defeat of Napoleon? Krajeski expands current thinking about the Royal Navy's leadership and accomplishments during this period. Cotton belongs to the most storied generation of naval commanders in British history. They first served during the American Revolution, participating in numerous combined operations and naval engagements along the North American coast, in the Caribbean, and elsewhere. The experience that they gained between 1775 and 1783 figured prominently upon the resumption of war against France in 1793. As a captain in the Channel Fleet, Cotton fought at the Battle of The Glorious First of June in 1794 and actively blockaded the French Atlantic ports; as an admiral between 1797 and 1806, he focused primarily on the blockade of Brest. In 1808 he achieved a modest measure of contemporary fame as commander of a squadron that supported Sir Arthur Wellesley's campaign in Portugal. Cotton subsequently influenced the Peninsular War as commander of the Mediterranean and Channel Fleet. He died while in command of the Channel Fleet.
