Excerpt from West Point Colors Some of my friends in a certain cadet class beset me to write a West Point story; promising me incidents at will, a plot, a name, and a tactical officer for the villain. Per haps it was because I declined this last sensational detail that they backed out of all the rest, and having given my boat a shove into deep water, left me to row and pilot as best I might. However, help came from other men, in other classes. I was cheered on in my work, and given story after story, with full leave to use them as I chose; and so it falls out that my book is quite true. Not that all the happenings ever came to any one cadet, or within the bounds of any four years' course. But they have almost all, at some time, been part of somebody's cadet life at West Point. With what men, or in what years, it does not matter: the last decade of the nineteenth century nearly enough covers the whole. "During the period covered by this volume, hazing had become a serious menace to the discipline of the Military Academy. The efforts on the" part of the authorities to suppress the vice met with but little co-operation from the cadets who believed that no plebe could he inspired with the proper sense of instantaneous obedience except by the so-called system of hazing which had been practiced for many years at the Academy. So strong, honest and deep-seated was this belief that the cadet who opposed it was subject to suspicion as a sycophant and “boot-lick.” Among the opponents of the system, however, was Douglas Atwell, president of the yearling class, a recognized and stalwart leader among his comrades. In these pages an effort is made to trace his struggle against the growing opposition of his class; in a word, to follow out the system of hazing to its logical consequences. The early experiences of our hero had admirably fitted him for the crisis with which he soon found himself confronted. As a poor country boy on a lonely farm, he had acquired that hard "horse" sense which recognizes the fundamental and rejects convenient theory; as a soldier in the U.S. Army in the Philippines, he had trained his fearless nature to ignore consequences, and as a plebe at West Point he had seen the folly of the "system", the injustice of the "code", and now with his whole heart he resolved to oppose many of his classmates"--Introduction.

The Political Aesthetics Of Isis And Italian Futurism written by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-17 with Social Science categories.

Through empirical analysis and theoretical reflection, this book shows that the aesthetics and politics of the Islamic State is “futurist.” ISIS overcomes postmodern pessimism and joins the modern, techno-oriented, and optimistic attitude propagated by Italian Futurism in the early twentieth century. The Islamic State does not only excel through the extensive use of high-tech weapons, social media, commercial bot, and automated text systems. By putting forward the presence of speeding cars and tanks, mobile phones, and computers, ISIS presents jihad life as connected to modern urban culture. Futurism praised violence as a means of leaving behind imitations of the past in order to project itself most efficiently into the future. A profound sense of crisis produces in both Futurism and jihadism a nihilistic attitude toward the present state of society that will be overcome through an exaltation of technology. Futurists were opposed to parliamentary democracy and sympathized with nationalism and colonialism. ISIS jihadism suggests a similarly curious combination of modernism and conservative values. The most obvious modern characteristic of this new image of fundamentalism is the highly aestheticized recruiting material.
