The importance of wetland systems for water pollution control has been continuously rising over the past two decades. What was originally regarded as an interesting ecologically inspired experimental concept has developed to the stage that nowadays many hundreds of wetland systems have been installed all over the world as an efficient treatment technology for varied types of wastewater. In some instances their results are not as expected, showing the need for more research, and this issue of Water Science and Technology highlights new studies leading towards solutions for those problems that arise in full-scale implementation. This issue offers a fully peer-reviewed selection of papers that review and assess research and management practices on natural and constructed wetlands, aimed at improving natural dynamic processes and pollution control. Papers cover the following topics: design criteria, operation and performance; optimization and modelling; nutrient removal; effluent reuse, pathogen removal and heavy metals; and ecological considerations. They provide scientists, engineers, managers and entrepreneurs with a timely compilation of authoritative insights into state-of-the-art research on and successful application of wetland systems around the world

Wetlands for Water Pollution Control is the third edition of the reputable reference guide by Miklas Scholz- formerly known as Wetland Systems to Control Urban Runoff. The book covers broad water and environmental engineering aspects relevant for the drainage and treatment of storm water and wastewater, providing a descriptive overview of complex 'black box' treatment systems and general design issues involved. The fundamental science and engineering principles will be explained to address the student and professional market. Standard and novel design recommendations for predominantly constructed wetlands and related sustainable drainage systems will also be provided to account for the interests of the professional engineers and environmental scientists. Latest research findings in wastewater treatment and runoff control will be discussed to attract academics and senior consultants who should recommend the proposed textbook to final year and postgraduate students, and graduate engineers, respectively. - Includes twelve new chapters with a broad overview of water and environmental engineering aspects relevant for the drainage and treatment of stormwater and wastewater - Contains case study topics covering wetlands, including natural wetlands and constructed treatment wetlands, sustainable water management, including sustainable drainage systems, and specific applications such as wetlands treating hydrocarbon, greywater, and piggery dye wastewater - Captures the latest findings in wastewater treatment, with chapters focusing on practical applications and field studies

Selected proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control, held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, USA, 11-16 November 2000. Wetlands are now considered as a widely applicable low-cost alternative for treating municipal, industrial and agricultural effluents. Increasing numbers of wetland projects have come into operation over the last decade, notably those in Florida. IWA's 7th Wetlands conference provided a forum for the synthesis and interpretation of the current status of treatment wetlands. The conference reflected the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, with a diversity of delegates from scientific and engineering disciplines contributing. It addressed research information on current understanding of treatment wetlands, and the need to transfer basic research information to managers involved in solving applied problems; and identified future directions for design and management of treatment wetlands. From a very large programme (of over 200 oral and poster presentations), 86 papers have been selected for these proceedings. As well as authoritative keynote presentations, there are papers on: phosphorus removal and transformations; nitrogen removal and transformations; pathogen removal; optimisation and modelling; ecological considerations; subsurface flow wetlands; surface flow wetlands; industrial wastewaters; agricultural wastewaters; and stormwater. They constitute an outstanding summary of our current knowledge of wetland systems in management of the water environment.
