What it was like growing up in Maori rural communities in the mid-twentieth century? Voices from the past answer this question in the pages of this book. In the book Tauira, acclaimed educator and anthropologist Joan Metge introduces readers to Maori methods of teaching and learning that are rich in lessons for us all. Based on extensive interviews, this book offers a window on a mid-twentieth-century rural Maori world as described by those who grew up there. Metge's work tackles important questions about Maori teaching and learning of this period: What was the role of whanau and hapu, household and marae, kaumatua and siblings, work and play? How much learning was practical and how much by teaching? Metge shows that Maori ways of learning flourished alongside the school system - especially in rural Northland, the Bay of Plenty and on the East Cape - and that those educational practices had a particular form and philosophy. Maori focused on learning by doing, teaching in context, learning in a group, memorising, and advancement when ready. Parents, grandparents and community leaders imparted cultural knowledge as well as practical skills to the younger generation through daily life and storytelling, in whanau and community activities. A history of the New Zealand Film Archive and its founding director. Jonathan Dennis (1953–2002), was the creative and talented founding director of the New Zealand Film Archive. As a Pakeha (non-Maori/indigenous New Zealander) with a strong sense of social justice, Dennis became a conduit for tension and debate over the preservation and presentation of indigenous and non-indigenous film archival materials from the time the Archive opened in 1981. His work resulted in a film archive and curatorship practice which differed significantly from that of the North American and European archives he originally sought to emulate. He supported a philosophical shift in archival practice by engaging indigenous peoples in developing creative and innovative exhibitions from the 1980s until his death, recognizing that much of the expertise required to work with archival materials rested with the communities outside archival walls. This book presents new interviews gathered by the author, as well as an examination of existing interviews, films and broadcasts about and with Jonathan Dennis, to consider the narrative of a life and work in relation to film archiving.

Die vorliegende Untersuchung befaßt sich mit ästhetischen Mischformen des postkolonialen Theaters, d.h. mit dramatischen Texten und Aufführungen aus den ehemaligen Kolonialländern des britischen Empire. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung steht der Begriff des Theatersynkretismus. Darunter wird eine synthetische Theaterform verstanden, in der die indigenen Kultur- und Darstellungselemente der betreffenden Länder mit europäischen Theaterkonzepten vermischt werden. Untersucht werden Stücke und Theaterformen aus Nigeria, Südafrika, der Karibik, Australien, Neuseeland und Kanada. In einzelnen, nach systematischen Gesichtspunkten gegliederten Kapiteln wird untersucht, wie in den synkretischen Theaterformen dieser Länder dem europäischen Theatermodell andere performative Strukturen gegenübertreten. Von zentraler Bedeutung ist dabei die orale Sprach- und Dichtungstradition gegenüber der schriftlichen, der Vorrang von Tanz, Musik und Rhythmus gegenüber der dialogischen Ausdrucksebene. Strategien wie Ritualisierung definieren Raum und Bewegung neu, eine differenzierte Körperästhetik und die Einbeziehung zahlreicher Varianten von Maskierung und Körperbemalung bestimmen die Ästhetik synkretischen Theaters mit jeweils unterschiedlicher, kulturspezifischer Akzentuierung. Besprochen werden u.a. Theaterstücke von Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, Derek Walcott, Jack Davis, Tomson Highway.
