What About Mozart What About Murder written by Howard S. Becker and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-22 with Social Science categories.

In 1963, Howard S. Becker gave a lecture about deviance, challenging the then-conventional definition that deviance was inherently criminal and abnormal and arguing that instead, deviance was better understood as a function of labeling. At the end of his lecture, a distinguished colleague standing at the back of the room, puffing a cigar, looked at Becker quizzically and asked, “What about murder? Isn’t that really deviant?” It sounded like Becker had been backed into a corner. Becker, however, wasn’t defeated! Reasonable people, he countered, differ over whether certain killings are murder or justified homicide, and these differences vary depending on what kinds of people did the killing. In What About Mozart? What About Murder?, Becker uses this example, along with many others, to demonstrate the different ways to study society, one that uses carefully investigated, specific cases and another that relies on speculation and on what he calls “killer questions,” aimed at taking down an opponent by citing invented cases. Becker draws on a lifetime of sociological research and wisdom to show, in helpful detail, how to use a variety of kinds of cases to build sociological knowledge. With his trademark conversational flair and informal, personal perspective Becker provides a guide that researchers can use to produce general sociological knowledge through case studies. He champions research that has enough data to go beyond guesswork and urges researchers to avoid what he calls “skeleton cases,” which use fictional stories that pose as scientific evidence. Using his long career as a backdrop, Becker delivers a winning book that will surely change the way scholars in many fields approach their research.

New Evidence of Murder * How Mozart was Murdered * Who Did It? * Where Mozart is Buried * Why Mozart was Murdered When H. S. Brockmeyer first became interested in Mozart and his tragic early death, she wasn't thinking of murder or any kind of foul play. Her curiosity was piqued, however, by all the unanswered questions that were overlooked by the scholars. As her interest grew and she began doing her own research, she was shocked to find more and more holes in the official story. She was hooked-and years later the result is this book. The damning facts about Mozart's tragic death are revealed in Echoes of a Distant Crime. This evidence has been available since his death in 1791; it has just been hidden in darkness-until now. Hint: Mozart was not killed by poison. Hint: Salieri didn't kill Mozart. Hint: Mozart is not buried in a pauper's grave-or any kind of grave-in the St. Marx cemetery in Vienna. An 18th century document holds an important clue to Mozart's life - and death - and is revealed in stunning detail in Brockmeyer's book, weaving a controversial, thoroughly researched tale of the composer's last two fatal years.

There is a macabre fascination in the spectacle of one so brilliant, dying so young, in such tragic circumstances. Was Mozart poisoned? Was he irresponsible and childish, dying from debauchery and dissipation? Did his wife contribute to his downfall? Was he driven to destruction by being ostracised as a rebel? Did his genius render him incapable of normal human contact and worldly prudence? Did he die because he had accomplished his mission as an artist and burnt himself out? Was he the victim of a run of bad luck? From 1791 to the present such stories have flourished; this book examines their development and the evidence for them.

Six weeks ago, the great composer told his wife he had been poisoned. Yesterday, he died. The city is buzzing with rumours of infidelity, bankruptcy and murder. But Wolfgang's sister Nannerl, returned from the provinces to investigate, will not believe base gossip. Who but a madman would poison such a genius? Yet as she looks closely at what her brother left behind - a handwritten score, a scrap of paper from his journal - Nannerl finds traces of something sinister: the threads of a masonic conspiracy that reach from the gilded ballrooms of Viennese society to the faceless offices of the Prussian secret service. Only when watching Wolfgang's bewitching opera, The Magic Flute, does Nannerl truly understand her beloved brother once again. For, encoded in his final arias, is a subtly crafted blueprint for a radical new tomorrow. Mozart hoped to change his future. Instead he sealed his fate.

It is 1820, and George IV has just assumed the throne. An ageing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is intrigued by the prospect of a coronation, scenting rich pickings. As a child he had visited England with his family in 1764, but instead of returning to Austria and an early death (as orthodox music history relates), they stayed on, deluded by a piece of royal generosity – the result of a misunderstanding of guttural royal English. Now Mozart conducts his own meretricious rubbish at a London theatre, but dreams of having one more ‘real’ opera staged before he dies. However, the trial of George IV’s wayward queen for adultery, before the Lords, leads Mozart into dangerous – and indeed murderous – waters. Insulted (most graciously) by the King, the composer finds himself involved in disposing of an inconvenient corpse and initiating enquiries to uncover the murderer . . . a matter which seems of remarkably little consequence to everyone else. This diverting and perplexing piece of alternative history is a delightful addition to our knowledge of the great composer, and to the output of Bernard Bastable, also known to crime fans as Robert Barnard. ‘Not only fetchingly funny, but also craftily plotted.’ The Scotsman ‘Great fun is had with real and imagined historical personages.’ Irish Times ‘Tremendous period skulduggery’ Sunday Times
