What Art Is - and Isn't is a fascinating, concise, and cogent explanation of the similarities and differences between art and design, of the role of craft and the computer, and their relationship with architecture. It broaches such taboo subjects as nudity, pornography, the erotic, Aboriginal art, graffiti, kitsch, 'intelligent design' and the art industry. What Art Is - and Isn't explains concisely and rationally the absolute centrality of the aesthetic in our daily lives as well as in art and design. This philosophical discussion will expand your horizons and open your mind to new concepts. But it also draws on art of the past, providing an easily understood critique of the writings of popular art and design theorists EH Gombrich, Nikolaus Pevsner, John Berger, Clement Greenberg and Arthur C Danto.

How an initially valueless object becomes worth hundreds of millions. And vice versa. The art world is a multi-billion-dollar industry which captures world headlines on a regular basis, for both good and bad reasons. This book deals with one of the most-discussed areas of controversy: high-profile objects that have experts arguing about their veracity. Some may have been looted, others may be fakes, some may be heavily restored or misattributed. Often, in these cases, analytical science is called on to settle a dispute. The authors of this book have decades of experience in this field, working on a range of objects dating from prehistory to the twentieth century. They present seven of the most famous cases from the Getty Kouros to the Turin Shroud – some of which are still contested, and examine how a few words from a connoisseur or scientist can make a virtually valueless object worth hundreds of millions. And vice versa.

Superhero Comics And Scottish Identity written by David John Boyd and has been published by Leuven University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-25 with Comics & Graphic Novels categories.

Superhero Comics and Scottish Identity explores the life and career of Glasgow-born, Eisner Award-winning, and internationally acclaimed Marvel, DC, and Image Comics artist Frank Quitely. With a prolific career spanning more than three decades, Quitely played a pivotal role in the British superhero renaissance of the 1990s and 2000s and in the explosive emergence of the Scottish new wave of comics, a movement that included peers like Alan Grant, Mark Millar, and Grant Morrison, but has been underrepresented in both comics studies and Scottish studies. This work investigates questions of historical and contemporary expressions of Scottishness in transcultural comics genres such as superhero, science fiction, and fantasy. Framed through the lens of comics and literary genres, as well as their British and American editors, Quitely’s approach to Scottishness is oblique and self-reflexive; his expressions of Scottishness are tensely bound to current nuanced examinations of Scottish national, literary and historical subjectivity. His work oscillates between two axiomatic antipodes: the regional, provincial, and local versus the transnational, cosmopolitan, and global. This comprehensive study also features an in-depth interview with Quitely, as well as unearthed archives, sketchbooks, notes, and donated or personal artworks not available elsewhere.

Art As Communication written by Shawn Simpson and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-02 with Philosophy categories.

Is art a form of communication? If so, what does art express or represent? How should we interpret the meaning of works created by more than one artist? Is art an adaptation, via natural selection? In what ways is art similar to—and different from—language? Art as Communication: Aesthetics, Evolution, and Signaling employs information theory, the theory of evolution, and the newly developed sender-receiver model of communication to reason about art, aesthetic behavior, and its communicative nature. Shawn Simpson considers whether art, from a biological point of view, is the province of only humans or whether animals might reasonably be said to create art. Examining the work of evolutionary biologists, art theorists, linguists, and philosophers—including Charles Darwin, Stephen Davies, H. Paul Grice, and others—he addresses how well different theories of communication explain meaning and expression in art and argues that art is much more continuous with other forms of communication than previously thought.

Jessica Vandermeyer is a too-tall, underdeveloped teen. She has a father she's never met, a stepfather who killed himself and a Spandex-wearing, oversexed mother whose new ex-Special Forces boyfriend, Jim, moved them from Wisconsin to Los Angeles. Over the course of one summer, Jess finds love but she also has nightmares of snakes, battered doves, and hairy hands that look like Jim's. She throws herself into creating art, morphing with her paintings in her struggle to survive in her often-chaotic, confusing world.
