In What Counts, Elena Herburger considers the effects of focus on interpretation. She investigates how focus affects the pragmatics and truth conditions of a sentence by rearranging its quantificational structure. Adopting a neo-Davidsonian stance, Herburger claims that various pragmatic and truth-conditional effects of focus sustain a uniform explanation if focus is viewed as imposing structure on otherwise unrestricted quantification. Phenomena discussed include "free" focus, the interaction between focus and negation, the quantificational structure of adverbs of quantification, the semantics of only and even, and the differences between weak and strong determiners. One of Herburger's aims is to show that a simple semantics, without reliance on such notions as semantic presupposition, can account for the truth-conditional and pragmatic effects of focus. Through the years, I never thought about writing, but I have always stored away certain sayings that I found interesting. One of those titles was Where the Timbers Cross, and I always thought that would make a good story. The problem was how to put a story with some of these sayings. It was almost five years before I came up with the story that goes with the book title. I wrote two stories in 1997 and put them in a folder and forgot about them. I happened to give a cousin the stories and asked him to read them. I assumed he would do what I would have done and put them in a drawer and forget about them. I talked to him a few weeks later, and he made copies of the stories and given them to neighbors, relatives, and pastors. I then started hearing from the readers of the stories asking for more stories. My third story was written in 2015. Then I was asked about a book, so here we are. This book composed of thirty-five Christian-fiction stories. Even though the stories are fiction, many are based on true happenings I have come across over the years. Even though my name is on the book, God wrote the stories. About the Author David Ford graduated from East Tennessee State University with a master's degree. He then spent the next thirty-five years teaching in middle and high school. During those years, he taught biology, advanced biology, environmental science, earth science, physical science, general science, and life science. Since retiring, he enjoys golf, biking, and working out. He also has discovered a hidden talent""writing.

Each of the so-called new technologies is based upon mathematics: The first computer was built as a part of the Manhattan Project to calculate models of the atomic bomb. The human genome project uses computers very often to find out the structure of the genome. And computers are mathematical machines, materialised mathematics. Social organisations, companies, and not least governments use computers to process information. A precondition for this is to formalise the social or economical structure which “produces” the information. This formalisation is a type of mathematisation, too. The social and economical models of organisations or companies are a part of the process of mathematising the world. Last, but not least, mathematics is a part of everyday life and work. People handle money, buy things, do handywork at home (measure areas to paint, and so on). All together, mathematics is not only the basis for technology, economy, work and everyday life, but a part of our culture. It seems clear that everyone in our society should know more about this.

What counts as evidence in linguistics? This question is addressed by the contributions to the present volume (originally published as a Special Issue of Studies in Language 28:3 (2004). Focusing on the innateness debate, what is illustrated is how formal and functional approaches to linguistics have different perspectives on linguistic evidence. While special emphasis is paid to the status of typological evidence and universals for the construction of Universal Grammar (UG), this volume also highlights more general issues such as the roles of (non)-standard language and historical evidence. To address the overall topic, the following three guiding questions are raised: What type of evidence can be used for innateness claims (or UG)?; What is the content of such innate features (or UG)?; and, How can UG be used as a theory guiding empirical research? A combination of articles and peer commentaries yields a lively discussion between leading representatives of formal and functional approaches.
