ST. JAGO—CAPE DE VERD ISLANDS After having been twice driven back by heavy south-western gales, Her Majesty's ship Beagle," a ten-gun brig, under the command of Captain Fitz Roy, R.N., sailed from Devonport on the 27th of December, 1831. The object of the expedition was to complete the survey of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, commenced under Captain King in 1826 to 1830--to survey the shores of Chile, Peru, and of some islands in the Pacific--and to carry a chain of chronometrical measurements round the World. On the 6th of January we reached Teneriffe, but were prevented landing, by fears of our bringing the cholera: the next morning we saw the sun rise behind the rugged outline of the Grand Canary Island, and suddenly illumine the Peak of Teneriffe, whilst the lower parts were veiled in fleecy clouds. This was the first of many delightful days never to be forgotten. On the 16th of January 1832 we anchored at Porto Praya, in St. Jago, the chief island of the Cape de Verd archipelago.

First published in 1839, ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’ by famous naturalist Charles Darwin is a vivid travel journal written over the course of his five-year journey about HMS Beagle. Full of detailed scientific observations, the journal also details his changing beliefs about species, which would go on to inform his theories on evolution and natural selection. Packed full of vivid descriptions, this is a fascinating window into the mind and workings of the renowned naturalist from this now legendary trip. Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist, best known for his work on the science of evolution. Though controversial at the time, his theory on natural selection and 1859 book ‘On the Origin of Species’ is now a fundamental part of modern science and studies of the natural world. His five-year voyage aboard HMS Beagle established him as a geologist and naturalist, and it was knowledge gleaned on this trip that led to his now internationally renowned theory of natural selection. Plagued by ill health in later life, Darwin died at the aged of 73 and was honoured with a burial in Westminster Abbey.

Read Charles Darwin's best-selling travelling book about his experiences on the second voyage of the ship HMS Beagle. This expedition under captain Robert Fitz Roy took place from December 27, 1831 to October 2, 1836. Fitz Roy sought companion for a second journey round the world, young student Charles Darwin took the opportunity and boarded the ship. He had to keep a daily log as well as detailed notebooks of his finds, and a diary which became his journal. The Beagle sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and carried out surveys around the coasts of South America, returning via Tahiti and Australia having circumnavigated the Earth. While the expedition was originally planned to last 2 years, it lasted almost five. Darwin's publication of the journal made his reputation as a scientist and author. His notes with detailed observations of plants and animals was the basis for his theory of evolution by natural selection in his world-famous work "The Origin of Species."
