What Did The Cross Accomplish written by Simon Gathercole and has been published by Westminster John Knox Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-23 with Religion categories.

In this book, readers will enjoy a fascinating and cordial discussion between N. T. Wright and Simon Gathercole on the meaning and nature of the doctrine of atonement. These two highly respected scholars discuss in clear and understandable language the meanings of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Their discussion explores various theories of atonement and looks closely at the Old Testament to discover Paul's meaning of his words that "Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures." Wright presents his case first, then Gathercole responds with a contrary point of view. Their discussion confronts questions including: What exactly is this “scandal of the cross”? What role does the notion of sacrifice, as understood in its ancient context, play in the atonement of Christ? Is the atonement a “victory”? How so? Was Christ a “substitute,” taking humankind’s place on the cross and suffering the death and judgment that sinners deserve? How does the death of Christ on the cross rescue or liberate sinners from death? Does the cross achieve benefits for only humans, or do those benefits extend to the entirety of creation? This book is a succinct conversation in which all these questions receive attention, with nuanced differences between the two interlocutors. This conversation along with Robert Stewart’s introductory framework make this book an excellent primer to the study of the atonement, and readers will come away with a deeper understanding of the meanings of the cross.

A Classic Essay on Penal Substitutionary Atonement from Theologian J. I. Packer Penal substitutionary atonement—the belief that Jesus's death on the cross satisfied God's wrath against sin—is central to the Christian faith, but frequently debated. Is it just to punish an innocent person in place of the guilty? How can the temporary death of one substitute for the eternal death of many? Why doesn't the cross grant Christians unlimited permission to sin? In this famous essay, late theologian J. I. Packer analyzes Scripture and the works of early Reformers to defend the truth of Christ's substitutionary suffering and death, the heart of the Christian gospel. Considered one of the most significant short works on penal substitutionary atonement from the 20th century, this careful, concise essay has influenced prominent theologians and is essential reading for students, pastors, and laypeople. From Renowned Theologian J. I. Packer: This work was originally delivered as a Tyndale Biblical Theology Lecture Part of the Crossway Short Classics Series: Other titles include The Lord's Work in the Lord's Way and No Little People; The Life of God in the Soul of Man; and Fighting for Holiness Includes a Foreword by Mark Dever

What Happened on the Cross offers a new and biblical understanding of how salvation was accomplished upon the cross, showing that the Penal Substitution view, common since the 1500s, does not have a biblical basis, and also showing that the Christus Victor understanding is inadequate. The book is founded upon the understanding that Jesus Christ is the Second Adam, and that is the foundation of how we are to understand how salvation was accomplished. Both the shedding of blood and death were essential in the accomplishment of salvation, and What Happened on the Cross shows why these were essential. Using over 740 Scripture verses to make its argument, the book gives a comprehensive picture from Genesis to Revelation of the many aspects involved in the accomplishment of salvation—above all showing clearly that the cross had nothing to do with “punishment for sins”—our sins were never punished upon the cross, rather, our sins were forgiven. Understanding how salvation was accomplished upon the cross, and that it was about forgiveness, not punishment, both exalts God and his greatness, demonstrates his perfect love and justice, as well as liberates our hearts towards him.

"Originally given as the annual Tyndale Biblical Theology Lecture in 1973 at Tyndale House, Cambridge, UK. In this address, Dr. Packer dives deeply in the Bible's teaching on the death of Christ and its atoning significance. Crucially, Packer is also concerned with how Christians and theologians down the centuries have dealt with the question "Is penal substitution one image of the atonement, or the heart of it?" He concludes that it's the heart"--

It Is Finished written by Michael Andam and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-27 with categories.

On the cross Jesus said it is finished. He was not referring to the end of His life. He did not say, "I am finished." He was referring to the task He came to accomplish. When I read the original meaning to that statement, I realised the great love Jesus have for humanity. The original meaning meant that many things required to be fulfilled were done for humanity.Jesus was absolutely focused on His mission to save all of humanity. The spiritual aspect of the whole mission was revealed. Jesus tried on many occasions to explain to His disciples on why He was to go to the cross and resurrect after three days. The spiritual aspect of the salvation process for humanity makes Jesus' statement significant and understandable. Jesus defeated Satan to give life back to humanity. This happened when He died on the cross at Calvary. He had to loose His life to give it to humanity as He explained with the sowing of seed. Jesus explained that the life is in the seed. Nothing happens when the seed is not planted. Once planted, the seed 'dies' to release the life inside the shell. He died to release His life for us as eternal gift. Jesus accomplished all that was required to pay for the sins of Adam. It was paid once and for all.
