What Do Lutherans Believe About Baptism written by John T. Conrad and has been published by CSS Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Religion categories.

How can pastors explain infant baptism using scripture? When John Conrad looked for resources to help him, he found none that addressed the issue from an almost exclusively scriptural viewpoint. And he discovered that couples from differing religious backgrounds (such as Baptist and Roman Catholic) often opted not to baptize their children mainly because they couldn't come to any point of agreement. So Conrad decided to fill this void -- and his research is an excellent clarification of this often murky topic. What Do Lutherans Believe About Baptism? will be useful to pastors as background for a sermon series or as information to share with parents preparing for baptism. It also makes for an excellent short study on baptism for adult classes. What Do Lutherans Believe About Baptism? is the best defense of infant baptism that I have seen anywhere. On Baptism of Our Lord Sunday I basically went through it, and lifelong Lutherans who have been going to church every Sunday finally understood why we baptize infants and why it is a biblical ministry. People not only liked it, I also received several requests for copies of my sermon and a lifelong Baptist couple who had worshiped in our church for several years finally decided to join. Rev. John Hogenson Grand Marais, Minnesota

The doctrine of theosis has enjoyed a recent resurgence among varied theological traditions across the realms of historical, dogmatic, and exegetical theology. In Christification: A Lutheran Approach to Theosis, Jordan Cooper evaluates this teaching from a Lutheran perspective. He examines the teachings of the church fathers, the New Testament, and the Lutheran Confessional tradition in conversation with recent scholarship on theosis. Cooper proposes that the participationist soteriology of the early fathers expressed in terms of theosis is compatible with Luther's doctrine of forensic justification. The historic Lutheran tradition, Scripture, and the patristic sources do not limit soteriological discussions to legal terminology, but instead offer a multifaceted doctrine of salvation that encapsulates both participatory and forensic motifs. This is compared and contrasted with the development of the doctrine of deification in the Eastern tradition arising from the thought of Pseudo-Dionysius. Cooper argues that the doctrine of the earliest fathers--such as Irenaeus, Athanasius, and Justin--is primarily a Christological and economic reality defined as "Christification." This model of theosis is placed in contradistinction to later Neoplatonic forms of deification.

No doctrine differentiates Confessional Lutherans from the broader Protestant world more than the conviction that regeneration comes through baptism. This volume consists of three works by Charles Porterfield Krauth on the subject. The fist work is "Infant Baptism and Infant Salvation in the Calvinistic System." Through an extensive look at Reformed divines, Charles Krauth demonstrates that Reformed theology has no grounds for assurance that one's baptized children are saved. He shows that the Reformed tradition has a consistent belief in infant damnation, whereas the Lutheran reformation gives assurance to parents of baptized children. The second treatise, "Baptism: The Doctrine Set Forth in Holy Scripture and Taught in the Evangelical Lutheran Church," is a systematic study of the Lutheran view of baptism in contrast to other perspectives. The final selection in this volume is from Krauth's The Conservative Reformation and Its Theology, in which he explains the teaching of the Lutheran Confessions on the doctrine.

Baptism written by David F. Wright and has been published by InterVarsity Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-16 with Religion categories.

The Christian church confesses "one baptism." But the church's answers to how, whom and when to baptize, and even what it means or does, are famously varied. This book provides a forum for thoughtful proponents of three principal evangelical views to state their case, respond to the others, and then provide a summary response and statement. Sinclair Ferguson sets out the case for infant baptism, Bruce Ware presents the case for believers' baptism, and Anthony Lane argues for a mixed practice. As with any good conversation on a controversial topic, this book raises critical issues, challenges preconceptions and discloses the soft points in each view. Evangelicals who wish to understand better their own church's practice or that of their neighbor, or who perhaps are uncertain of their own views, will value this incisive book.
