What Do We Need A Union For written by Timothy J. Minchin and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-11-09 with History categories.

The rise in standards of living throughout the U. S. in the wake of World War II brought significant changes to the lives of southern textile workers. Mill workers' wages rose, their purchasing power grew, and their economic expectations increased--with little help from the unions. Timothy Minchin argues that the reasons behind the failure of textile unions in the postwar South lie not in stereotypical assumptions of mill workers' passivity or anti-union hostility but in these large-scale social changes. Minchin addresses the challenges faced by the TWUA--competition from nonunion mills that matched or exceeded union wages, charges of racism and radicalism within the union, and conflict between its northern and southern branches--and focuses especially on the devastating general strike of 1951. Drawing extensively on oral histories and archival records, he presents a close look at southern textile communities within the context of the larger history of southern labor, linking events in the textile industry to the broader social and economic impact of World War II on American society.

The ideas in this book aren't based on what might work - or abstract models of trade unionism - but actual best practices from union organizers who are using these tactics in the field. Ultimately union organizing isn't about signing cards - it's about empowering people and changing lives. It's about building power and improving conditions for working people as a whole. We can't do this reaching 30 people at a time - shop by shop. We need to create plans to reach thousands of workers. Chapter 3: Measuring Your Outreach Efforts Chapter 3 examines how to measure and track your outreach efforts to find out what is working and find areas where you have opportunities for growth. Chapter 4: Creating an Online Lead Generating Machine More non-union workers view your union's join page than read your leaflets or speak to your organizers. Union organizers need to fundamentally change how they use the Internet. Chapter 4 shows how to create an organizing website that is effective at generating leads. Chapter 5: The Agitation / Education Campaign Agitation/education campaigns are long-term campaigns that will help you keep in touch with workers at strategic targets without leaving burnt turf from failed drives. Chapter 7: Using Facebook for Union Organizing While many unions have experimented using social media, most haven't succeeded in getting the number of leads they would like. Chapter 7 looks at how to use Facebook to help get organizing leads for your union. Chapter 8: Reaching Workers Before They Enter the Workforce By investing early we can build a relationship with workers in our industry before they enter the workforce. Chapter 9: Getting Organizing Leads from Members Engaging members in organizing and building a culture of organizing are critical to building union density. Chapter 9 covers your organizing department's biggest asset - your union's members.

Organizing Matters written by Guy Mundlak and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-29 with Political Science categories.

Organizing Matters demonstrates the interplay between two distinct logics of labour’s collective action: on the one hand, workers coming together, usually at their place of work, entrusting the union to represent their interests and, on the other hand, social bargaining in which the trade union constructs labour’s interests from the top down. The book investigates the tensions and potential complementarities between the two logics through the combination of a strong theoretical framework and an extensive qualitative case study of trade union organizing and recruitment in four countries – Austria, Germany, Israel and the Netherlands. These countries still utilize social-wide bargaining but find it necessary to draw and develop strategies transposed from Anglo-American countries in response to continuously declining membership.

With so many labor unions already existing, why do we need a new union? Simply, because these unions don't serve all qualified people, we need a new union that fills in the gaps. Andrew Bushard filed a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) unfair labor charge against his employer Accenture. The NLRB agent "found merit" in his charge, so the NLRB prosecuted Accenture. Accenture capitulated and agreed to a settlement, so Andrew won the case. Victory! Cover illustration by rifatnaim.

Organizational crises, in modern society, requires an immediate response. Chaotic stages occur during organizational changes resulting in emotional experiences for leaders who develop intense feelings of anger, shock, and frustration. Leaders who are not prepared will be overwhelmed by the need for an aggressive response to change. The ability to solve problems successfully will increase movement of the organization though the chaos stage. Building a foundation of preparation for a leader, prior to the organizational change stage, will decrease levels of dysfunction the organization may experience. It is time for a new approach to managing organizational chaos. The research in this book provides original contributions to leadership studies by applying general systems and chaos theory to leadership behaviors in times of crisis. Chaos theory offers different perspectives that will allow leaders to develop capacities for changing their existing approaches to chaotic events. Results from the research in this study are valuable to credit union leaders, and also all business leaders, who need new models that recognize external factors influencing the sustainability of the organization. This adaptability is one of the most effective leadership skills a leader can display (Higgs & Rowland, 2005). Introducing general systems and chaos theory into organizational leadership has become a new approach to leadership psychology and philosophy, promising to influence leadership and management theories (Bums, 2002). The significance of chaos theory for leadership studies lies in its heuristic power. If the challenges to normal events are observed through the lens of chaos theory, organizational leaders may make better-informed decisions in times of uncertainty.

Union Proof written by Peter J. Bergeron and has been published by Dog Ear Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09 with Industrial management categories.

Today, organized labor is fighting for its very existence. They're using every weapon at their disposal - including every channel of communication, running corporate campaigns, and influencing politics and legislation with large donations. Their foot soldiers are waging an all-out war against corporate America, and the spoils of victory are your employees. In Union Proof: Creating Your Successful Union Free Strategy, Peter Bergeron, a 33-year veteran of labor relations and human resources, shares his experiences, offers advice and gives you the "best practices" that truly make a difference in remaining union-free. Far from a legal text, Peter provides the practical tools and advice that can help you make union representation irrelevant within your organization. Peter J. Bergeron spent most of his 33+ years of service with General Dynamics, managing all areas of Human Resources with particular emphasis on Labor/Employee Relations and Union Avoidance. Most notably, Peter's primary successful union avoidance experience thwarted many large union organizing efforts at one of General Dynamics' largest non-union production facilities. Peter was utilized by numerous General Dynamics business units throughout the country to lead counterorganizing efforts in campaigns ranging from as few as 13 to as many as 6,500 employees. Peter earned BA in Psychology from Villanova University and a MS in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.

What Unions No Longer Do written by Jake Rosenfeld and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-10 with Social Science categories.

From workers' wages to presidential elections, labor unions once exerted tremendous clout in American life. In the immediate post-World War II era, one in three workers belonged to a union. The fraction now is close to one in five, and just one in ten in the private sector. The only thing big about Big Labor today is the scope of its problems. While many studies have explained the causes of this decline, What Unions No Longer Do shows the broad repercussions of labor's collapse for the American economy and polity. Organized labor was not just a minor player during the middle decades of the twentieth century, Jake Rosenfeld asserts. For generations it was the core institution fighting for economic and political equality in the United States. Unions leveraged their bargaining power to deliver benefits to workers while shaping cultural understandings of fairness in the workplace. What Unions No Longer Do details the consequences of labor's decline, including poorer working conditions, less economic assimilation for immigrants, and wage stagnation among African-Americans. In short, unions are no longer instrumental in combating inequality in our economy and our politics, resulting in a sharp decline in the prospects of American workers and their families.
