Soon after I was saved, I knew in my heart the importance that repentance had played in my salvation, when by God’s grace the Holy Spirit convicted me of my sin and allowed me to turn from my sin and my old self and turn to Jesus and become a new creation. Sadly today repentance is left out of the gospel message, even though Jesus commanded it. Today you don’t hear it preached or taught, though Jesus and his disciples preached repentance. Paul preached repentance. Jesus preached repentance, in the churches of Revelation. So whatever happened to repentance?

Throughout church history there have been many attacks on doctrines of the faith and one of them is repentance. "Faith and Repentance Inseparable" was the title to a sermon delivered by Charles Haddon Spurgeon in 1862. It was necessary by one of the most influential pastors in England to clarify what the Scriptures tell us about faith and repentance because of other doctrines that had crept into England. The gospel was a command, "Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Discover how in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a major doctrine in the church has come to mean something less than the Words of God intended. Repentance is more than a change of mind since that alone does not address confession to God of sin, repudiation, and forgiveness of sin. The first major doctrine to come under attack since the days of Augustine was the doctrine of sin. Today the doctrine of repentance is under attack because it is the last vestige of a reminder of the sin nature of man. When was the last time anyone commanded the sinner to repent? "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How can we, that are dead to sin, live any longer in it?" (Romans 6:1-2). How does one become dead to sin? Discover what many church pastors and teachers said about repentance between AD 1599 and AD 1937 in "What Ever Happened to Repentance?"

"The tears of repentance wash away no sins. It is bad theology to say that they do. That is the office, that the work of the blood of Christ alone. Contrition makes no atonement for transgression. It is wretched theology to say that it does. It can do nothing of the kind. Our best repentance is a poor, imperfect thing—and needs repenting over again. Our best contrition has defects enough about it to sink us into hell. “We are counted righteous before God only for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, by faith, and not for our own works or deservings,” not for our repentance, holiness, almsgiving, sacrament receiving, or anything of the kind. All this is perfectly true. But still it is no less true that justified people are always penitent people, and that a forgiven sinner will always be a man who mourns over, and loathes his sins. God in Christ is willing to receive rebellious man, and grant him peace, if he only come to Him in Christ’s name however wicked he may have been. But God requires, and requires justly, that the rebel shall throw down his arms. The Lord Jesus Christ is ready to pity, pardon, relieve, cleanse, wash, sanctify, and fit for heaven. But the Lord Jesus Christ desires to see a man hate the sins that he wishes to be forgiven. Let some people call this “legality” if they will. Let some call it “bondage” if they please. I take my stand on Scripture. The testimony of God’s Word is plain and unmistakable. Justified people are always penitent people. Without repentance there is no forgiveness of sins."

All people have sinned and broken God's law. None of us are good (Rom. 3:10). And as a result of our sin, God commands us to repent. But what does repentance look like? In this booklet, Dr. R.C. Sproul looks at several people in the Bible and how they give us a model of repentance. Dr. Sproul explains that true repentance is not simply a religious ritual or the resolve to do better next time. Rather, it's a spiritual conversion in which we turn from our sin and to God in faith. The Crucial Questions booklet series by Dr. R.C. Sproul offers succinct answers to important questions often asked by Christians and thoughtful inquirers.

The Nature Necessity And Character Of True Repentance written by Zachary Crofton and has been published by Puritan Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-13 with Religion categories.

When you finish reading this practical work by Zachary Crofton on biblical repentance, you might say to yourself, “I’ve never repented.” That’s the kind of impact he is going to have on you if you read this work even in a cursory manner. In order to have a deeper walk with Christ, repentance is at the heart and life of the sinner who walks comfortably with God. However, repenting, reordering and realigning your fallen mind to sit in connection with God’s will, is not as simple as praying a prayer, as some would have you believe. Crofton says that repentance is a “sense of, and sorrow for sin, as committed against God.” The sinner must spread himself before the Law of God to survey the entire course of his own life. He needs to weigh himself in the balance of God’s perfection. The Gospel-sinner knows he is imperfect, and in view of God’s Law, which shows him his sin, he comes away not just lacking in some spiritual and moral goodness, but sees the utter viciousness of his nature against God’s prescription for holiness. He then sentences himself as accursed of God, agreeing that the Law is right and good, and he knows that he is “bound” to experience God’s Divine fury for his sin in hell by God’s justice which is just and good. He not only sees that he is a true sinner before God, but sorrows under his understanding of sin, and is “ashamed of such a sad and sinful state.” He comes to learn that repentance is a supernatural gift given to him from God, and that he must turn from sin and confess his sin. This kind of repentance is necessary to remove the wrath and judgment of God and to “answer the call of the gospel,” which requires everyone to repent. Crofton explains the characteristics of true biblical repentance from 2 Corinthians 7:11. There are eight characteristics that he covers: godly sorrow, care, clearing of ourselves, indignation, fear, vehement desire, zeal and revenge against sin. And, finally, Crofton demonstrates 10 points which show how you, reader, might gain godly repentance, completely soaking the sinful heart in the blood of Jesus, with great speed, and earnestly looking for repentance only at the hands of God.
