Dogma is one of those words. Many people see dogma as a bad thing-as the unreasonable, unthinking adherence to a belief, even in the face of contrary evidence. But when the Catholic Church presents some of her teachings as dogmas, she does not mean that these tenets are irrational or to be thoughtlessly embraced. Dogma is the bedrock of truth, an inexhaustible feast for the mind, not an impediment to thinking. Why? Because dogmas rest on the Word of God, Truth Himself, who can neither deceive nor be deceived, and who wants his Word to be known. The great theologian Charles Journet explores the meaning of dogma in his classic work What is Dogma? In what sense are dogmas an object of faith? How do reason and faith relate to dogmas? How are dogmas both essentially unchangeable and yet open to development? Are dogmas accessible only in learned theological language or are there common-sense ways of understanding them? Journet addresses these and other important questions. He also discusses examples of dogmatic development: the dogmas of the Trinity, of Christology, and of Mariology. And he explores the relationship of dogma and mystical contemplation. In short, Journet shows why "dogma" is a subject of which Catholics need not be afraid.

The question, What is a dogma? can be asked in many contexts. Karl Rahner remarked in 1962 that the question was rarely posed explicitly in the usual Catholic textbook theology. Some of the membra disiecta of the Catholic doctrine of dogma are doubtless to be gathered, he notes, from the treaties on the loci theologici and the magisterium of the Church, and he himself considers dogma in the context of 1) a general theory of what it is to make a statement, 2) the theology of faith, 3) ecclesiology, 4) his own theology of mystery, and 5) the theology of revelation and Scripture. Since 1962, Walter Kasper has offered a history of the idea of dogma and a consideration of dogma in its relation to the Gospel. The question about dogma continues to be asked within the question of the development, historicity and progress of dogma as witness the works of J.H. Walgrave and J.P. Joussua. Thomas B. Ommen discusses dogma in the context of modern theories of hermeneutics. Contemporary concerns with the nature and limits of theological pluralism make one turn to dogma as to a possible source or guarantor or expression of unity. A very Dulles asks whether dogma poses as great an obstacle to ecumenical discussion and reconciliation as is sometimes supposed. Attention to cultural and not only theological pluralism also redounds to the question of what dogma is or can be?

Excerpt from What Is a Dogma? "The primary significance of a dogma is not its speculative content, but the speculative truth of dogma is expressed in terms of action." Such is the proclamation of a Roman Catholic thinker which has evoked a lively discussion, and although his work has been placed on the Index, this has evidently been for other reasons than any connected with the charge of heresy. For this thesis defines the general concept of dogma in the expressions of the well-known philosophy of action originated by Maurice Blondel and published in his book L'action which appeared in 1893, and as far as we know his book was not placed on the Index. From the beginning of the first chapter: WHAT IS A DOGMA? THIS title, "What is a Dogma?" is only a simple question and by no means does it promise an answer. It is a question from the philosopher to the theologian calling for an answer from the theologian to the philosopher. It would indeed be vain to pretend to give here a complete and definite answer to this complex question. Such problems cannot be solved in a few pages. Therefore the reader must not look for a settled doctrine in the short article which is to follow, nor even for categorical theses on any point. If he sometimes finds that I speak in too affirmative a tone let him be kind enough to admit that I do so only for the sake of greater clearness in my questions. In fact I wish to confine myself to simple suggestions which I present merely as rough drafts of solutions offered for the criticism of those who have authority to judge of the subject. And moreover I can justify this attitude of mine by an imperative reason, namely that I am not a theologian and do not like to decide matters in which I am not proficient. Perhaps someone will ask, why then do I take the trouble to treat a subject of which I admit I have no particular knowledge? Here is my reason. In our day every layman is called upon to fulfill the duty of apostleship in the incredulous world in which he lives. He alone can serve efficiently as the vehicle and intermediary of the Christian message to those who would not trust the priests. Therefore it is inevitable that some problems of apologetics should be laid before him, problems whose solution is an absolute necessity for him if he does not wish to fail in the task which the force of circumstances has laid upon him without possibility of escape, if he wishes to be always ready, following the counsel of the Apostle, to satisfy those who ask him the reason for his faith. It is only natural therefore that I desire to be informed; and if I formulate my question publicly it is because I am not the only one in this situation, and because there is a general interest that the answer shall also be a public one. Besides I have another motive for acting as I am. If I freely acknowledge my incompetence in a matter which is properly theological, yet on the other hand I consider that I am well situated to appreciate correctly the state of mind in contemporary philosophers that is opposed to the understanding of Christian truth. And it is to this that I bear witness in saying frankly, even brutally (if I must in order to be fully understood), what I know, what I have observed, what perhaps are not always sufficiently comprehended, namely the exact reasons why unbelieving philosophers of to-day repulse the truth that is brought to them and the legitimate causes (agreeing in this with the Christian philosophers themselves) why they are not satisfied with the explanations that are furnished them.

The Development of Dogma examines the nature of dogmatic statements and the causes of development. It devotes particular attention to the emergence of the form of dogmatic statements at the Council of Nicaea, but notes how this form is anticipated in the New Testament. It situates dogma and its development within the matrix of the great fundamental theological realities of Scripture, Tradition, and Magisterium. Fr. Mansini examines at some length how the Church comes to recognize a develop-ment as a genuine development rather than as a distortion of the word of God. The Development of Dogma is especially valuable today for its discus-sion and defense of the philosophical presuppositions of dogma, which are often simply presupposed but should not be ignored in a complete account of development. These presuppositions touch on fundamental philosophical issues, including the nature of knowledge, the objectivity and trustworthiness of names, and the various logical forms employed in understanding how development is related to a closed revelation. The historicity of human knowledge is also addressed, and the role of dogma itself in heading off the extreme relativism the historical nature of man is supposed to imply for ecclesial faith and life. The Church's dogma about dogma enunciated at the First Vatican Council is also examined. The role of certain fundamental concepts in understanding the possibility of the irreformability of dogma it speaks of is expressly addressed--concepts in principle accessible to all human beings and that enable a trans-cultural, trans-temporal proposal and reception of revealed truth.

WHEN Catholic Dogma is mentioned there are those who ask, is it worth while to spend time in discussing dogma when there is so tl1uch, york to be done? Give your mind and your labor, they say, to the rescue and help of the wretched and the depraved, the sinful and the unfortunate; go and practise toward them that love which is the fulfilling of the law; but do not waste your energies upon disputations about creeds. Yet the Church has always occupied itself very largely with dogma, and has strenuously insisted upon the importance of it. With a world to convert, S. Paul filled his letters chiefly with dogma. In the tremendous decline and fall of the Roman empire, and wreck of civilization, the Church dwelt on dogma perpetually, and the Church was in earnest then as now to convert and save the world. In tilnes of reformation not only is righteousness of life emphasized, but the faith of the Church is scrutinized with the keenest criticism. Hoe does it happen that at specially critical times dogma is made so prominent in the Church's life? Inasmuch as it is the peculiar business of the Church, among all the institutions in the world, to teach Christianity, anything that it has uniformly held to be matter of highest importance has a strong a priori claim upon our attention. We cannot excuse ourselves for not attending to it by saying that: it does not interest us. If it be important it is our duty to attend to it. If it make any difference 'whether we believe one thing or another, we are bound to find out what the truth is and to maintain it. In determining whether it is worth while to spend our time in studying and discussing the dognlas of Christianity, we need first to see clearly what Christianity really is. If it were merely a system of conduct, or a system of conduct and worship, much might fairly be said in disparagement of creeds and theology. The fulfilling of the law is love to God and love to man; why trouble ourselves with anything more? A popular expression of the day is that Christianity is a life and not a doctrine; therefore, it is urged, let us devote all our energies to right living and not mind the disputations of the schools
