The phenomenon of physiological memory is contemplated from a point of view which embeds 'memory' into the totality of cognitive processes and considers this phenomenon as a computational operation rather than a storage and retrieval problem. Neuropsychological and neurophysiological evidences are cited that make the 'storage hypothesis' untenable. In lieu of these the basic structural and functional organization of mechanisms that compute inferences inductively are proposed. The alterations of the structure of such systems in the learning process are interpreted as 'memory', and physiological, psychological and mechanical examples are cited. A molecular hypothesis regarding the feasibility of macro-molecules computing recursive functions is presented. (Author).

Finally, in chapter three, I examine a more difficult class of decisions that require individual memories to be used for planning future action. Using neuroimaging to decode memory access, I find that that the statistical structure of relationships between memories determines when they are used to support planning. Combined, these three chapters suggest that we are capable of flexibly employing multiple forms of memory, with distinct neural mechanisms, to guide a variety of choices.
