(1999) auf der Ebene der phonetischen Enkodierung anzusiedeln ist. Traditionell wird angenommen, dass die zugrunde liegende Störung bei der Sprechapraxie auf einen Ausfall oder Fehler im Bewegungsplan einzelner Sprachsegmente und/oder deren Anordnung zu Silben zurückzuführen ist. Den Segmenten wird also eine entscheidende Rolle in der Anordnung von Wörtern zu geschrieben. Dies ist eine Sicht aus der generativen Linguistik, in der üblicherweise angenommen wird, dass im mentalen Lexikon eine begrenzte Menge von Einheiten gespeichert ist. Diese Einheiten werden abgerufen, kombiniert und zum Output generiert. Es spricht jedoch einiges gegen eine solche generative Sicht. Für eine entscheidende Rolle des Segmentes gibt es keine einheitliche Evidenz. Außerdem wäre aus dieser Sicht die Sprachenkodierung nicht „lernfähig“ und auch noch so frequente Wörter müssten immer wieder neu enkodiert werden. Alternative Ansätze nehmen jedoch eine Lernfähigkeit für artikulatorische Bewegungen, wie es sie auch für andere motorische Fähigkeiten gibt, an. Allgemein wird behauptet, dass hoch frequente Einheiten als artikulatorische Gesten gespeichert sind und nicht bei jedem Zugriff neu zusammengesetzt werden müssen. Niedriger frequente Einheiten müssen dagegen immer wieder neu zusammengefügt werden. Auch Levelt et al. (1989; 1992; 1994) entwickelten solch ein Dual-route-Model für die Sprachenkodierung. Anders als bisher nehmen sie an, dass hoch frequente Silben in einem mentalen Silbenlexikon (mental syllabary) gespeichert sind. Auf der Ebene der phonetischen Enkodierung gibt es demnach eine silbische/direkte Route, bei der hoch frequente Silben als Bewegungsgesten im Silbenlexikon gespeichert werden, und eine segmentale/indirekte Route, bei der niedrig frequente Silben online aus kleineren Segmenten zusammengesetzt werden.
