This book explores the relevance of classical ideas in the anthropology of time tothe way we understand history, participate in the events around us, and experienceour lives. Time is not just an abstract principle we live by or a local cultural construct: it is shaped, punctuated, organized, and suffered in complex ways by real people negotiating their lives and relations with others. Space may be opened up for politics, violence or revolutionary change within the framework of ceremonial markers of social time: holy days, festivals and carnivals. People create and recreate patterns in the way they imagine the past, present and future at such moments, through material objects, language, symbolic action and bodily experience. The rhythms of social life, including periodic episodes of sacred or special time, interact with 'historical events' in strange ways. They are fundamental not only to the human condition but to the making andremembering of history, as well as to what we recognize as the unexpected or abnormal. The Qualities of Time brings anthropologists and archaeologists together in a new conversation about the 'patterns' of our understanding and experience of time. The authors reflect on how we should interpret evidence about the distant past, andhow far the structuring of social time is a human universal. The cosmos itself is not governed or regulated by time but by chance, so cosmology can never appear consistently logical. Time and regulation are human concepts. The 'points and instants' notion is no longer credible. Points are our basic intellectual tools since the instants arise through moving from point to point, making time discrete. A.N. Whitehead's definition of time as "a sequence of non-interacting moments" is credible. Russell also said "There is no longer a universal time..." And Professor Eddington observed that time does not 'flow'. The Minkowski 4-D geometry is seen as plainly false, and so time travel is impossible. There are no days in nature at all. There is only one constant day. All existence is daylight. The nights are freakish and irrelevant. The earth's rotations are just flippant shadows over reality. Nothing in astronomy happens only by night and not by day. Logically deduced, time appears to be human and we can solve the problem of how it passes by, too."

One hot topic in contemporary linguistics concerns how we express the passage of time in natural language. In particular, interesting questions have been raised as to how formerly understudied languages fit into deep-rooted theoretical frameworks, which among other features comprise a grammatical category of tense. This monograph mainly contributes to this debate in two complementary ways: through a detailed description of a large set of new data from two varieties of Caboverdean, a Portuguese-related language, and through a novel approach to the role of its few temporal morphemes, which allows to better define how tense meanings, aspect, and mood, together with other linguistic and extralinguistic information, provide what we understand as past, present, and future. The adequate study of this non-standardized language, with its impressive internal variation, thus brings new insights to old theoretical problems. Additionally, a welcome side effect of these new descriptions and analyses is that they promote a scientifically grounded attitude towards linguistic diversity.
