Competition talent shows have been among the most popular on television in the 21st century. The producers of these shows claim to give ordinary people extraordinary opportunities to change their lives by showcasing a specific skill leading to a new career trajectory. Most participants will claim that they entered to get a big break and to develop a career they have always dreamed of. To what extent do these shows deliver on such promises? Following through what happens to leading contestants in singing, entertainment, modelling, cooking and business entrepreneur competitions, this book shows that few go on to achieve lasting success in their chosen career. Many return to obscurity or to their previous lives. Some enjoy a low level career in the new direction delivered by the competition they entered. Just a few become truly successful. The pop and entertainment themed contests have discovered just a handful of major pop stars and entertainers out of many hundreds who have taken part after the initial auditions. Turning to the cookery or business franchises, there are few who go on to achieve lasting success in their chosen career. In these it is equally likely that the winners go on to enjoy success with media careers rather than as chefs or entrepreneurs. The most successful franchise of all is the fashion model competition (Next Top Model), which has yielded a high hit rate in terms of career success. What the analysis here also reveals is that it isn’t only the winners who ultimately benefit the most from their appearances in these shows. Moreover, television picks its own stars by recruiting contestants because they are telegenic or have a good backstory as much as for their relevant talents. In this way, a talent hungry medium has co-opted these franchises to replenish its own needs.

This book is for and about the millions of people who are between jobs (code for out of work), have been between jobs, or know of someone who has been. It is about how to navigate the transition from employment-for-life, career development support, and a company-sponsored pension to downsized, outsourced, and replaced. Bill Holland explains the macro-trends that have converged to create an environment of job instability and anxiety, and then moves beyond this context to present specific tactics and techniques that readers can use to stay one step ahead in their careers. More than a manual for job searches and career-building strategies, Are There Any Good Jobs Left? helps readers interpret trends, assess such temptations as leaving the corporate rat race for the entrepreneurial life and considers the ethics of constant networking. Featuring an annotated listing of books and Web sites, the book is not so much an indictment of corporate disloyalty as an explanation of the phenomenon, and a guidebook for anyone faced with job transition, change, or growth in today's turbulent environment. This book is for and about the millions of people who are between jobs (code for out of work), have been between jobs, or know of someone who has been. It is about the transition from employment-for-life, career development support, and a company-sponsored pension to downsized, outsourced, and replaced. It is about managing your career proactively and creatively in an environment where no job is presumed to be permanent. Bill Holland explains the macro-trends that have converged since the heyday of the white-collar worker after World War II to create an environment of job instability and anxiety, and then moves beyond this context to present specific tactics and techniques that readers can use to stay one step ahead in their careers, whether they are senior executives or just starting out. Much more than a manual for job searches and career-building strategies, Are There Any Good Jobs Left? shows readers how to interpret trends (e.g., will this wave of outsourcing affect me?), assess such temptations as leaving the corporate rat race for the entrepreneurial life, and consider the ethics of constant networking. In addition, he explores the dynamics of the increasingly diverse workforce, and the prospects for men, women, and minorities as they all vie for the most attractive positions. Featuring an annotated listing of books and Web sites, Are There Any Good Jobs Left? is not so much an indictment of corporate disloyalty as an explanation of the phenomenon and a guidebook for anyone faced with job transition, change, or growth in today's turbulent environment.

Step Up written by Ash Beckham and has been published by Sounds True this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-24 with Self-Help categories.

A New Vision of Inclusive Leadership What makes someone a leader? Someone you vote for, work for, or listen to for their expertise? With Step Up, equality advocate Ash Beckham challenges us to embrace a different vision of leadership—to stop focusing on external authorities and start reclaiming our own ability to create change. “What we need most are everyday leaders,” she writes. “We need people to step up and be the change they wish to see in the world. Anyone can do it. You can do it.” Whether your path involves activism, political engagement, or simply being a positive voice in your workplace, home, and community, Beckham’s Step Up provides essential guidance on cultivating the eight pillars of everyday leadership: • Empathy—the art of relating to others with compassion for our shared humanity, regardless of whether we agree • Responsibility—how we can raise our awareness and consciously choose to behave in ways that heal instead of harm • Courage—understanding the nature of fear so we can move beyond our comfort zone one step at a time • Grace—how keeping our higher purpose always in sight helps us stop reacting with fear or anger • Individuality—learning to value and celebrate our uniqueness, including the parts of ourselves we often reject • Humility—ways to keep the ego in check and open the door to honest, collaborative relationships • Patience—guidance for disarming our tendency to rush ahead so we can act with greater deliberation and forethought • Authenticity—how we can embody our deepest truths and lead by example in any situation For each pillar, Beckham shares engaging stories of her own journey from isolation and anger to a place of greater openness and connection—supported by scientific research and everyday practices to mindfully change the way you relate to yourself and the people in your life. Step Up is a powerful call to action—to speak when it feels easier to be silent, to do good without being self-righteous, and to create a world of inclusion where everyone has a voice and everyone belongs.

A guide to reading Tarot as a spark for community engagement and social change “A beacon of insight and action.” —Nyasha Williams, author of Black Tarot and I Affirm Me The cards in the Tarot deck offer seventy-eight invitations for change, not only in our inner life, but beyond. Lane Smith invites us to read each card with an eye toward the collective—how we can contribute to liberation in the world. Smith shares, “Behind every story about Tarot—and about the world—are power relationships which are often invisible.” 78 Acts of Liberation examines the structure, history, and components of Tarot through the lens of power, helping us better understand power dynamics in our life and in society. After a brief history that highlights often-ignored aspects of Tarot’s past, Smith guides us through each card with reflections about clarifying our values and putting them into action. The cards are organized numerologically so that each number corresponds to a type of action, from Ones as Acts of Initiation to Tens as Acts of Generation. Every individual card offers questions for personal reflection and social consideration. Each Major Arcana card is illustrated with an example from a social movement—from the Indigenous Water Protectors to #MeToo—that illuminates how we can put the power of these timeless archetypes into action today. Every Minor Arcana card is linked to a practical and actionable term to know or skill to practice. 78 Acts of Liberation helps us explore: • What our core values are, and how we can put them into action • How we can be socially engaged, whatever our life circumstance—whether it’s through what we teach our children or through collective action and protest • How to sustain ourselves over time and through challenge As Smith explains, “Truth alone will not set us free. We have to act on it.” This guide offers inspiration for action—action that can feel joyful, hopeful, freeing, and empowering.
