Beauty Sick written by Renee Engeln, PhD and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-18 with Social Science categories.

“[Beauty Sick] will blow the top off the body image movement…provocative and necessary.” — Rebellious Magazine An award-winning psychology professor reveals how the cultural obsession with women's appearance is an epidemic that harms women's ability to get ahead and to live happy, meaningful lives, in this powerful, eye-opening work in the vein of Peggy Orenstein and Sheryl Sandberg. Today’s young women face a bewildering set of contradictions when it comes to beauty. They don’t want to be Barbie dolls but, like generations of women before them, are told they must look like them. They’re angry about the media’s treatment of women but hungrily consume the outlets that belittle them. They mock modern culture’s absurd beauty ideal and make videos exposing Photoshopping tricks, but feel pressured to emulate the same images they criticize by posing with a "skinny arm." They understand that what they see isn’t real but still download apps to airbrush their selfies. Yet these same young women are fierce fighters for the issues they care about. They are ready to fight back against their beauty-sick culture and create a different world for themselves, but they need a way forward. In Beauty Sick, Dr. Renee Engeln, whose TEDx talk on beauty sickness has received more than 250,000 views, reveals the shocking consequences of our obsession with girls’ appearance on their emotional and physical health and their wallets and ambitions, including depression, eating disorders, disruptions in cognitive processing, and lost money and time. Combining scientific studies with the voices of real women of all ages, she makes clear that to truly fulfill their potential, we must break free from cultural forces that feed destructive desires, attitudes, and words—from fat-shaming to denigrating commentary about other women. She provides inspiration and workable solutions to help girls and women overcome negative attitudes and embrace their whole selves, to transform their lives, claim the futures they deserve, and, ultimately, change their world.

South Side Girls written by Marcia Chatelain and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-19 with History categories.

In South Side Girls Marcia Chatelain recasts Chicago's Great Migration through the lens of black girls. Focusing on the years between 1910 and 1940, when Chicago's black population quintupled, Chatelain describes how Chicago's black social scientists, urban reformers, journalists and activists formulated a vulnerable image of urban black girlhood that needed protecting. She argues that the construction and meaning of black girlhood shifted in response to major economic, social, and cultural changes and crises, and that it reflected parents' and community leaders' anxieties about urbanization and its meaning for racial progress. Girls shouldered much of the burden of black aspiration, as adults often scrutinized their choices and behavior, and their well-being symbolized the community's moral health. Yet these adults were not alone in thinking about the Great Migration, as girls expressed their views as well. Referencing girls' letters and interviews, Chatelain uses their powerful stories of hope, anticipation and disappointment to highlight their feelings and thoughts, and in so doing, she helps restore the experiences of an understudied population to the Great Migration's complex narrative.

The Grasinski Girls written by Mary Patrice Erdmans and has been published by Ohio University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-04 with Social Science categories.

The Grasinski Girls were working-class Americans of Polish descent, born in the 1920s and 1930s, who created lives typical of women in their day. They went to high school, married, and had children. For the most part, they stayed home to raise their children. And they were happy doing that. They took care of their appearance and their husbands, who took care of them. Like most women of their generation, they did not join the women’s movement, and today they either reject or shy away from feminism. Basing her account on interviews with her mother and aunts, Mary Erdmans explores the private lives of these white, Christian women in the post-World War II generation. She compares them, at times, to her own postfeminist generation. Situating these women within the religious routines that shaped their lives, Professor Erdmans explores how gender, class, ethnicity, and religion shaped the choices the Grasinski sisters were given as well as the choices they made. These women are both acted upon and actors; they are privileged and disadvantaged; they resist and surrender; they petition the Lord and accept His will. The Grasinski Girls examines the complexity of ordinary lives, exposing privileges taken for granted as well as nuances of oppression often overlooked. Erdmans brings rigorous scholarship and familial insight to bear on the realities of twentieth-century working-class white women in America.

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK IS 'A MONUMENT TO THE HUMAN SPIRIT' One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime comes from the diary of a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank. Edited by her father Otto H. Frank and German novelist Mirjam Pressler, this is a true story to be rediscovered by each new generation. _________________________________ 12th July 1944: 'It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.' In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse. Aged thirteen, Anne kept a diary of her time in the secret annexe. She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and isolation from the outside world. A thought-provoking record of tension and struggle, adolescence and confinement, anger and heartbreak, the diary of Anne Frank is a testament to the atrocities of the past and a promise they will never be forgotten. _________________________________ 'One of the greatest books of the century' Guardian 'Rings down the decades as the most moving testament to the persecution of innocence' Daily Mail 'Astonishing and excruciating. My book is about three girls who are very mean and rich. They came from different states, and they also run the school. The three popular girls are so very rich and very spoiled to the bone. Each of the three girls have different personalities; they are always expressing their styles of clothes that all 3 of them wear to school everyday. Chloe tries to spend all of her money so she can buy clothes online. She does not get along with her sister Amy. Chloe hates going to school every day; she is mean to a lot of people at that school. Chloe never gets to spend any time with her beau because she is always working and also doing her homework after she gets off from work. The two of them argue a lot. She does not have the perfect family. She is the hottest chick at school. Summer is just the sweetest person that you will ever meet. She does not always yell at people. Her favorite color is yellow. Summer has a sister named Naomi. Let me tell you something else, they never agree on anything with each other you could possibly name of. The two of them would definitely honestly fight about it. Summer used to have a boyfriend named Max, but I am not going to tell you what happened to their past relationship. Kaylee was the more fly chick and a hot, sexy chick. She was not always so sweet for looks can be so deceiving. She can stay mad at anyone for a very long time. It takes her a long time to get over something that made her very angry. I totally forgot where Kaylee lives anyway. Kaylee loves going to school; she is a straight A-student. She loves to party with her friends and drink all night long. Kaylee really does not have a curfew; she can come home anytime. She would never date any guys that have really bad breath. Kaylee’s high school sweetheart is Jake Stanley. The two of them have been dating ever since middle school and now in high school. She fell head over heels for that guy. He rides motorcycles. He is basically the love of her life. Jake and Kaylee do everything together like going out dancing or hanging out with his friends. They make the perfect couple. He makes her laugh and smile. They both make each other happy. What they have is real love, not puppy love. So you need to read to find out what happens to these three girls in my book. It is a very interesting book, You are going to really like it. It is very funny at the same time and very sad too. There are a lot of funny parts in the book that make me laugh.
