What Market What Society What Union written by Martinho Lucas Pires and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-30 with Law categories.

This book provides a discussion of some of the most pressing challenges facing EU integration: political and economic governance, constitutional status and citizenship. It does so by discussing the work of one of the most original Portuguese voices in EU studies, Francisco Lucas Pires. In his swan song, here translated into English for the first time, Lucas Pires critically discusses the Treaty of Amsterdam, dissecting the process of its enactment, and its wider consequences for the EU. His profound, original and premonitory observations are commented on in this book by six young, prominent EU law scholars from different research areas. The result is an original and sagacious reflection, aimed both at researchers of EU law and policymakers alike, on the victories and shortcomings of the European project, providing refreshing views on a significant but often-neglected moment in the EU’s history, as well as new avenues of critical thinking for the development of European integration. Martinho Lucas Pires is Ph.D. Candidate at Nova School of Law Lisbon, Assistant lecturer at Católica Law School Lisbon, and Counsel at DLA Piper ABBC Advogados Lisbon, Portugal. Francisco Pereira Coutinho is Associate Professor and Vice-Dean at Nova School of Law Lisbon, Faculty of Law of the NOVA University of Lisbon, Portugal.

`As one would expect, this is a well-crafted, literate and absorbing account of European trade union development. Established scholars and advanced students will enjoy the discussion of theory and cases′ - The Journal of Industrial Relations `[A] detailed and fascinating history of trade unions in the three countries [Britain, Germany, Italy]... considers how the unions could recover from the intense disarray of recent years′ - Labour Research `Everyone concerned over the construction of a truly social Europe will learn much from this thoughtful and probing study′ - Professor Colin Crouch, Istituto Universitario Europeo In this comprehensive overview of trade unionism in Europe and beyond, Richard Hyman offers a fresh perspective on trade union identity, ideology and strategy. He shows how the varied forms and impact of different national movements reflect historical choices on whether to emphasize a role as market bargainers, mobilizers of class opposition or partners in social integration. The book demonstrates how these inherited traditions can serve as both resources and constraints in responding to the challenges which confront trade unions in today′s working world.

The turmoil that shook Eastern Europe in the late 1980s and challenged traditional centers of power in the Soviet Union has touched off an intense debate about the forces behind the recent collapse of Soviet-type systems. Civil society, a key concept in the debate, is the focus of this thought-provoking volume, which contrasts the views of Eastern scholars and activists in independent movements against those of Western academics. The authors' various perspectives on the struggle between the people and their governments highlight different facets of civil society, providing new insights into its definition, origin, and function within a nation's public life.

An easy-to-use guide for British family historians researching ancestry tied to organizations like the Freemasons, friendly societies, and trade unions. Fraternal and friendly societies and trade unions—associations that provide mutual aid and benefits—have a long, fascinating history, and the most famous of them—the Freemasons—have a reputation for secrecy, ritual, and intrigue that excites strong interest and has been the subject of widespread misunderstanding. Daniel Weinbren, in this concise, accessible handbook, dispels the myths surrounding them and gives readers insight into their real purposes, their membership, and their development over the centuries. He has also compiled a detailed compendium of books, archives, libraries, and Internet sites that readers and researchers can consult to find out more about these organizations and to trace the involvement and experience of family members who were connected with them. The origins of these societies are explored as are their economic, social, and civic functions, and the impact they had on the lives of members. The range of such societies covered includes the popular and international ones such as the Oddfellows, Foresters and Rechabites, as well as the smaller local fraternal organizations. The type of assistance they offer, their structure and hierarchy, meetings and ceremonies, regalia and processions, and feasts and annual gatherings are all described and explained. So much information about these organizations and their membership is easily available if you know where to look, and Weinbren’s work is the ideal introduction to them. Anyone who has a forebear who was at some time linked with one of these organizations will find his book to be an essential guide to their research.

By shedding light on EULEX - the EU mission to Kosovo – this open access book investigates the EU’s peacebuilding activities in that country, in the light of the normative power theory in the post-conflict setting and peacebuilding theory. Ten years after the massive engagement of the EU in the country torn by war, the authors critically assess the effects of the EU projecting its normative power – the enforcement of its standards, ‘good’ or ‘bad’ – through the EULEX mission, taking into consideration also the local aspects, so far neglected in this field of research. Inspecting thoroughly the EULEX activities in the police, customs and judiciary sector, the authors reveal that the mission can contribute to a positive change, but only in those cases which do not request a heavy political involvement and broad leverage by other international players (for example in improving standards of work in police and customs). When it comes to the most serious cases of organized crime, corruption and war crimes, EULEX, however, has not been able to address them effectively due to several internal mission’s deficiencies and external factors; the perceived ineffectiveness of EULEX among the local population led to the lowering of trust not only in this CSDP mission, but also in the EU in general. This open access book offers a comprehensive assessment of the EULEX mission, based on two Horizon2020 research projects: IECEU - Improving the Effectiveness of Capabilities in EU Conflict Prevention, and KOSNORTH – The European Union and its Normative Power in a Post-conflict Society: A Case Study of Northern Kosovo (Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship). As such it is an invaluable resource for scholars, students and policymakers interested in security questions in South Eastern Europe and EU external action.
