What Remains Of Israel written by Naphtali Benyamin and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

What Remains of Israel is a story about people. Naphtali Benyamin takes a candid look, beyond the nearly daily headlines of terror, into the lives of Israelis from several walks of life. Through the stories of both Jews and Arabs, the impact of the second intifada and its implications for peace in Israel are described in vivid terms. What Remains of Israel touches on the human aspect of a people besieged by the most evil form of terror. It tells their stores, their courage, but, above all, it tells of their hope and their desire for peace. Naphtali Benyamin explains Israel as few have. He argues Jerusalem's place in Islam, questioning its status in classical Islamic history. He explains how the government of Israel is structured and the social tension among Israel's religious, secular and Arab citizens; he examines the intentions of Hamas and presents an example of its negotiating strategy. His work is a careful analysis to describe what remains of Israel. What he found is enlightening.

Many towns flourished in the Southern Levant during the 9th to 7th centuries BCE. More than a century of excavations of these towns in Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Territories has resulted in an increased understanding of how such towns functioned and what they looked like. The remains of Megiddo, Samaria or Hazor, for instance, have received numerous visitors. This book aims at summarizing what is now actually known about the architecture of the towns. The reader will be surprised and impressed when he starts to realize the degree of style these rather small towns could have. With this book, the author conducts a virtual city walk through such a town from the later Iron Age in this region.

Six scholars explore the nature of history and historical reconstruction and the place of history within biblical studies. The uncritical use of both text and artifact that continues to dominate histories of Israel and Judah testifies to the need for a wider grassroots awareness of the basic issues involved in doing history as a biblical scholar. A growing number of scholars are questioning the theoretical underpinnings of the main 'schools' of research and are calling for an approach that makes a more critical evaluation of both textual and artifactual material before using it in historical reconstruction. These essays were first presented at the annual SBL/ASOR meeting in 1989 in a symposium entitled 'The Role of History and Archaeology in Biblical Studies'.

Excerpt from The Remnant Found: Or, the Place of Israel's Hiding Discovered The subject of the return of the Jewish people to the favour of the God of their fathers is one of deep and surpassing interest and moment. The eye of faith, looking into the depth of the divine records, perceives this peculiar people, under the cloud of a frowning Providence, prepared in the fulness of time to be led forward and planted in the Lord their Righteousness, for a name and a praise in every land: (Isaiah lxii. 7.) It beholds them, not as the subjects of the divine hatred, but the objects of God's compassionate love: (Isaiah xlix. 15, 16.) Landscape And Ideology written by Doron Bar and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Burial categories.

The book deals with the formative years of Israel’s evolving symbolic landscape (1904–1967). It covers the stories of a few dozen Jews who passed away in the Diaspora and later their remains were taken to be buried for the second time (and sometimes for the third) in Israel. These were Zionists and politicians, writers and poets, heroes and public activists whose common denominator was that they all passed away in the Diaspora, far and detached from the national homeland that they fought for before their tragic death. Only later, in an act of repair, their coffins were sent to be buried in the “sacred” Zionist soil, in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or Dgania. These graves became pilgrimage sites and contributed to the design of Israel’s landscape. The book examines how and why such great effort was made to bring their remains to Israel for reinterment, and how the funerals and graves of the public figures became state symbols and national instruments for establishing Israeli sovereignty over the land.

The Joshua Generation written by Rachel Havrelock and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-30 with History categories.

How a controversial biblical tale of conquest and genocide became a founding story of modern Israel No biblical text has been more central to the politics of modern Israel than the book of Joshua. Named after a military leader who became the successor to Moses, it depicts the march of the ancient Israelites into Canaan, describing how they subjugated and massacred the indigenous peoples. The Joshua Generation examines the book's centrality to the Israeli occupation today, revealing why nationalist longing and social reality are tragically out of sync in the Promised Land. Though the book of Joshua was largely ignored and reviled by diaspora Jews, the leaders of modern Israel have invoked it to promote national cohesion. Critics of occupation, meanwhile, have denounced it as a book that celebrates genocide. Rachel Havrelock looks at the composition of Joshua, showing how it reflected the fractious nature of ancient Israelite society and a desire to unify the populace under a strong monarchy. She describes how David Ben-Gurion, Israel's first prime minister, convened a study group at his home in the late 1950s, where generals, politicians, and professors reformulated the story of Israel's founding in the language of Joshua. Havrelock traces how Ben-Gurion used a brutal tale of conquest to unite an immigrant population of Jews of different ethnicities and backgrounds, casting modern Israelis and Palestinians as latter-day Israelites and Canaanites. Providing an alternative reading of Joshua, The Joshua Generation finds evidence of a decentralized society composed of tribes, clans, and woman-run households, one with relevance to today when diverse peoples share the dwindling resources of a scarred land.
