This edited volume approaches regionalism as one potential pattern in a changing global order. Since the end of the Cold War, different forms of territorialization have emerged and we are confronted with an increasing number and variety of actors that are establishing regional projects. This volume offers an innovative contribution to the study of this new complexity by exploring constellations of regional actors, spatial scales and imaginations beyond state-centred perspectives as well as on multiple, often overlapping levels. The chapters analyse the emergence, trajectories and outcomes of regionalisms from the perspective of the Global South, specifically concentrating on regional projects in Latin America and Africa, but also in the Asia-Pacific. They attempt to identify the specific conditions and junctures of different forms of region-making in their external (global) and internal (local/national) dimensions. The events and processes that have taken place in the last decade in South America have given way to one of the most interesting regional phenomena under a global crisis and within a changing world order. From the traditional status of Washington ́s backyard and reign of economic and political stability, South America has increasingly turned into a region marked by a heterodox development in the light of other dominant regional tendencies of development-the European Union, NAFTA and the Asia Pacific. The political economic nature of the new South American regionalism (NSAR) is far from echoing the dominant interpretations about it, which reflects the major regional projects today. Given the reach and scope of the existing literature on the topic of the NSAR, there is an important gap concerning its academic exploration in relation to its nature of development, political economic complexity, challenges and orientations. In this sense, this book explores, from a wider and pluralist political economic perspective, the developmental dimensions of the NSAR within a changing hemispheric and world order in transformation. Next to economic giants such as China, India or Russia, a different set of players is emerging thanks to the gradual process of regionalization. Regional blocs mainly based on economic cooperation are reshaping the global fragmentation of power, affecting in turn the status of their member states in the international order. In this essay two main aspects are taken into account: the structuring of a “new” multipolar order and the nature and role of regional blocs as actors operating in it. Thus a third level of analysis is introduced, consisting of the linkage between the emergence of regional blocs and the impact they have on the international strength of their member states. In order to provide a better understanding the author means to focus on the Central America Integration System (SICA) and evaluate whether or not it has influenced the current Meso-American countries’ status in the “new” global system’s structure, carrying out a comparison with the most developed regional bloc, the European Union (EU).
