This did not look like a ""choice"" to me. It looked exactly like what it was... a pan full of baby parts! What the Nurse Saw is the unbelievable true story of my experience as a nurse working in an abortion clinic---how witnessing many abortions, including a late-term procedure referred to as partial-birth abortion, changed my life forever. I now believe it is my mission to share with as many people as possible the truth about abortion. I want to share with you the details as if you were standing silently beside me in the operating room. We realize that everyone who picks up this book will not be pro-life. I myself was pro-choice at the start of my journey. It is our greatest hope that people, no matter what their opinion, will decide to be pro-truth. Although Oprah Winfrey and I may not share all of the same views on abortion; something she said many times struck a chord with me. Oprah said, ""Once you know better, you do better."" At the end of my three days in an abortion clinic, I knew better. My testimony before Congress, my volunteer work, and my continued effort to educate others in writing this book is my attempt to do better! I challenge you, the reader, after knowing all the facts, to do the same: Better!

"ENTERTAINING...GRITTY, BEHIND-THE-SCENES DETAILS OF HOSPITAL OPERATIONS." --Booklist "In the prologue of this book, Echo Heron, RN, states: Nurses are able to do what they do because they are rich in the gifts of healing, compassion and love. She then goes on to illustrate that statement with 18 chapters of amusing and moving true stories of her career in critical care and in the emergency room." --Chicago Tribune "Heron gives a voice to her fellow nurses (a savvy, wisecracking, take-no-guff voice) and turns them into real people." --Seattle Post-Intelligencer "Although Heron provides enough personal detail to make the book a very good read, its importance lies in her depiction of how sick people really function, what nurses do to help them, and how little physicians, hospitals and our society understand or value that work." --The Washington Post Book World AN ALTERNATE SELECTION OF THE LITERARY GUILD(c) From the Paperback edition.

My occupational memoir reveals one nurse’s bedside observations on where nurses come from, how we are educated, treated in the workplace and how we learn to do what can never be taught in a curriculum. When a patient vomits explosively onto your chest how you may unexpectedly vomit right back. How to explain to a deaf patient where a suppository goes while an audience of staff and visitors listen in from the hallway. How to collect your thoughts and make a plan when you arrive for a home care visit to find your elderly confused patient has ingested a full bottle of liquid laxative and left evidence of those results all over the walls, floor and Barco lounger in the home. It is where medical science meets nursing artistry. Where technology meets humanity. Where hearts open and wounds heal. Through selected vignettes, I recognize modern nurses’ courage to lean into discomfort and hard emotions. I acknowledge the power they hold in their healing hands and throw forward a lifeline of hope to renew their faith and joy in their vocation. And to my many non-nurse readers, come experience a nurse’s day; what we see, feel, hear and touch. Have a peek behind the bedside curtain.

I Saw Them Die written by Shirley Millard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-02-09 with History categories.

New hardback edition: This true contemporary account of an American nurse's horrific - and sometimes bizarre - experiences while serving at a French battlefield hospital near Soissons during World War I has poignant layers which even the often naïve author did not see. "As our camion drove through the château gate we could see that the grounds were covered with what looked like sleeping men." That is just her own introduction to the unit, housed in what was once a country estate, and soon she was standing hours on end treating friend and enemy alike, facing harrowing hyperreality with aplomb. Shirley Millard is throughout a willing reporter of her fascinating perspective on war, youth, loss, and love - and always slapdash surgery and gallows camaraderie, inside a MASH unit before there was M*A*S*H. And before antibiotics, it is painfully clear. But she is also an unwitting reporter of so much more. The modern reader sees truths and wrongs that Shirley fails to experience herself, some at the time and too many upon rested reflection. An unprepared nurse from the United States volunteering in World War I France shares her diary and later reflections of the horrific and poignant events of 1918, and in the process reveals more about the fascinating people and times, and especially herself, than she apparently realized. It then becomes riveting even on levels she never intended. Answers the question, When are maggots good news? And when is a man a grateful ashtray?Presented to modern readers with a new Foreword by Professor Elizabeth Townsend Gard. Features contemporary photographs of World War I medics in France. This is the library-quality hardcover edition, published by Quid Pro Books in 2015.

In the 1950s, nurses served as handmaidens to the physician; by the start of the new millennium, they had become admired independent practitioners. Nightingale Tales is a peek into that transition, as told by a nurse who lived it. Each chapter is a stand-alone story depicting the ridiculous mores nurses have been subjected to over the years, the archaic equipment they’ve had to struggle with, and the changes in the profession, brought about by time, the feminist movement, and advances in technology. Told with humor and compassion, the stories of Nightingale Tales provides an unusual—and highly entertaining—window into the world of medicine from the mid-twentieth century to the present.

The mesmerizing basis of the movie starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain—a “stunning book...that should and does bring to mind In Cold Blood”—takes you inside the mind of America's most prolific serial killer, whose 16-year long "nursing" career left as many as 400 dead. (New York Times) Edgar Award Nomination, Mystery Writers of America BBC (Top Ten Books of the Year) “The best books I read this year” (top ten books, EW) —Stephen King “The Best Journalism of the Year.". —The Daily Beast “The most terrifying book published this year. It is also one of the most thoughtful...call it literary true crime...” —Kirkus Reviews ("Best Books of the year") After his December 2003 arrest, registered nurse Charlie Cullen was quickly dubbed "The Angel of Death" by the media. But Cullen was no mercy killer, nor was he a simple monster. He was a favorite son, a husband and beloved father, a best friend and a celebrated caregiver. Implicated in the deaths of as perhaps as many as 400 patients, he was also perhaps the most prolific serial killer in American history. When, in March of 2006, Charles Cullen was marched from his final sentencing in an Allentown, Pennsylvania, courthouse into a waiting police van, it seemed certain that the chilling secrets of his life, career, and capture would disappear with him. Now, in a riveting piece of investigative journalism nearly ten years in the making, Charles Graeber gives us the unbelievable true story. Based on hundreds of pages of previously unseen police records, wire-tap recordings and videotapes and interviews with whistleblowers and confidential informants, and years of exclusive jailhouse conversations with Cullen himself, the homicide detectives who worked against the clock and administrators to try and finally crack the code on Cullen’s crimes, and Cullen’s fellow nurse Amy, an overworked single mom asked to choose between protecting her friend Charlie and stopping a potential serial killer, THE GOOD NURSE weaves an urgent and terrifying tale of madness, humanity and heroism. Cullen's murderous career in the world's most trusted profession spanned sixteen years and nine hospitals. Time and again he was fired or allowed to resign. But Cullen continued to work and kill, shielded by a hospital system that, by accident or design, successfully protected the institution while failing to protect patients. THE GOOD NURSE is a searing indictment of a crushing and dehumanizing for-profit medical system, and an inspiring human story of the previously unknown individuals who chose to risk their jobs and lives to do the right thing. Mesmerizing and irresistibly paced, this book will make you look at hospitals and the people who work in them in an entirely different way.
