The Newbery Medal–winning author of Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! gives readers a virtuoso performance in verse in this profoundly original epic pitched just right for fans of poetry, history, mythology, and fantasy. Welcome to ancient Greece as only genius storyteller Laura Amy Schlitz can conjure it. In a warlike land of wind and sunlight, “ringed by a restless sea,” live Rhaskos and Melisto, spiritual twins with little in common beyond the violent and mysterious forces that dictate their lives. A Thracian slave in a Greek household, Rhaskos is as common as clay, a stable boy worth less than a donkey, much less a horse. Wrenched from his mother at a tender age, he nurtures in secret, aided by Socrates, his passions for art and philosophy. Melisto is a spoiled aristocrat, a girl as precious as amber but willful and wild. She’ll marry and be tamed—the curse of all highborn girls—but risk her life for a season first to serve Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Bound by destiny, Melisto and Rhaskos—Amber and Clay—never meet in the flesh. By the time they do, one of them is a ghost. But the thin line between life and death is just one boundary their unlikely friendship crosses. It takes an army of snarky gods and fearsome goddesses, slaves and masters, mothers and philosophers to help shape their story into a gorgeously distilled, symphonic tour de force. Blending verse, prose, and illustrated archaeological “artifacts,” this is a tale that vividly transcends time, an indelible reminder of the power of language to illuminate the over- and underworlds of human history.

A compelling story of a teenager who finds meaning, purpose and life from a place of hopelessness, despair and pain. A Powerful description of the mind of the Master Potter who formed her into a masterpiece. Following is in her words. I have been writing in my journal for about ten years now and I would like to read something I wrote in it just the other day: Today in pottery class, I found out who I am. I discovered that I am clay-very ordinary and unformed. I'm just one cup, one jar, one person among billions in this world. I have no shape and no identity. When people touch me, it's as if they feel unclean and want to get rid of me. They don't know what to do with me, how to mold me, so they avoid me. I wrote that because I believed I had no value as a human being and I had no idea where to find that value. I made my journal and my imagination my best friends because I had none. In fact, the day I wrote this, a girl sat behind me on the bus and said, "Sarah, if you didn't even exist, no one would notice." That girl might be in the audience right now. I do not know. But what I want to say to her and to everyone is that it's not what people say that defines your value. How many of you here today feel like ordinary clay that no one dares to touch? How many of you are going to remain ordinary because you think that no one values you? Well, I want you to know that you are not ordinary at all. It's true that you and I start out like clay, ordinary and unformed. In fact, clay is really just some soil mixed with water. If it is left to stand on its own for a long time, it will become a dry, hard, shapeless mass and return to the soil. Therefore, clay in itself has nothing to boast about, but it does possess a potential to be different, even to be extraordinary. And so do you, but potential is not enough. Clay must be picked up and held in the hands of a master potter who will see it with eyes that can dream and a mouth that will utter words of a bright future. Many of you are going to college in a few months. Some are entering the workforce or enlisting in the army. What kind of clay will you become as you interact with the world? You might choose to become the clay that refuses to be formed by the potter. That clay sits by the side of the potter's wheel and slowly dissolves itself back into the earth. But there are some unique pieces of clay that choose to be placed into the hands of a master potter and they write different life stories. They become a valuable pot or figurine or vase that decorates the halls of palaces and does what it was made to do. They learn to value themselves in the same way that their creator values them. They make valuable additions to the world as they do what their Creator designed them to do-to work on His behalf. I can tell you this with authority because I have met my Master Potter. He touched me differently than anyone in this room ever could and that one touch made a world of difference. He sees the potential in the ash when you cannot. He visualizes the beautiful strokes of color on the surface of the jar even before the first stroke of brush touches it and any color is applied. He admires the brightness even when it is still dark, formless, and empty. He smells the fresh-made jar out of the oven even before a single finger has been placed upon it. When you give that consent, you become a new creation with a new identity. So when someone tells you that it doesn't matter whether or not you exist, you can confidently remember why it does matter that you exist...because you have been created with the hands of God himself and He has work for you to do. May you have a truly blessed day and a life that reflects the hands of the one who crafted you for His glory.
