This is a story of a country on the edge of Europe that was at the centre of European events, and a home to Empire builders in an age that came to scorn imperialism. Here we come to understand an economy which was a dominant influence on the industrial age but consequently suffered the most acute symptoms of its decline. In this society education was a cherished institution though much of the century was spent in its reform; tartan clad bride-grooms still stood at altars at the century's close though divorce increasingly stole the optimism of newly weds and single mothers grew in numbers outside school gates. Politically, the century is to be remembered as the deliverer of devolution, though for most of the time, nationalism was scarcely taken seriously. Catriona MacDonald points to the irony of native critics who called on Scotland's cultural ambassadors to more honestly reflect their roots rather than their aspirations, as if to do otherwise they betrayed some recognized yet unspoken 'cause'. This truly was a place where extremes met: Scotland was their expression, and its history was in their gift. Whaur Extremes Meet is a major contribution to the literature on Scotland in the twentieth century.

On the cusp of memory and history, the story of Scotland's twentieth-century is contested territory: international yet parochial; prosperous yet ailing; and, passionate yet temperate. This thematic account of Scotland's twentieth century examines the economic, social, political and cultural aspects that shaped the country during the period. Catroina MacDonald underlines the tensions inherent in the life of a nation distinguished by stark changes and surprising continuities, a fragmented identity, a shifting and at times uneasy accommodation in the UK nation state, and an ongoing engagement with globalising tendencies. In identifying the choices, ambitions, possibilities and contradictions that Scotland experienced during a century of profound change, she uncovers a country in which one can truly say extremes met.

'Dooble Tongue' is an imaginative meditation on Robert Burns and Scottish poetry, as well as a book that engages and contests the customary assumptions and practices of literary criticism. Beginning with an examination of two contemporary Scottish poets, W.N. Herbert and Robert Crawford, and moving back in time to the Scottish Modernist master Hugh MacDiarmid, then further back to Burns himself, the study of the Scottish tradition is situated in a broad historical context. The focus throughout is on language (particularly Scots), more broadly vernacular literature in relation to culturally elite literary and critical modes- as well as on questions of literary nationalism and the cultural politics of poetic discourse.

After more than 300 years of union with its larger and wealthier neighbour, Scotland has the opportunity to be independent. It is a chance that well-known Scottish cultural and political commentator Paul Henderson Scott firmly believes should be taken. In Scotland: A Creative Past, An Independent Future, he looks to Scotland's vibrant literary and cultural heritage to envisage an independent nation. Revisiting aspects of Scotland's political and cultural past, from the Union of 1707 to literary figures including Robert Louis Stevenson and Alasdair Gray, this is a passionate and eloquent exploration of Scotland's past, and its potential future - a future where national confidence, culture and identity can flourish. Scott's provocative book persuasively argues the case for Independence, considering a variety of topics, both historic and current, cultural and political. But in every case, the benefits of Independence are clear. Scotland has the opportunity to become more confident, prosperous and contented - an opportunity that even the most sceptical reader will be persuaded that they should take.

Performing Scottishness written by Ian Brown and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-13 with Performing Arts categories.

This wide-ranging and ground-breaking book, especially relevant given Brexit and renewed Scottish independence campaigning, provides in-depth analysis of ways Scottishness has been performed and modified over the centuries. Alongside theatre, television, comedy, and film, it explores performativity in public events, Anglo-Scottish relations, language and literary practice, the Scottish diaspora and concepts of nation, borders and hybridity. Following discussion of the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath and the real meanings of the 1706/7 Treaty of Union, it examines the differing perceptions of what the ‘United Kingdom’ means to Scots and English. It contrasts the treatment of Shakespeare and Burns as ‘national bards’ and considers the implications of Scottish scholars’ invention of ‘English Literature’. It engages with Scotland’s language politics –rebutting claims of a ‘Gaelic Gestapo’ – and how borders within Scotland interact. It replaces myths about ‘tartan monsters’ with level-headed evidence before discussing in detail representations of Scottishness in domestic and international media.
