"In the past few years, so many scandals have rocked corporate South Africa that crises seem to be the norm rather than the exception. In the glare of the public eye, with cameras, microphones and cellphones in their face, many leaders who excel in organisations suddenly become scared, confused and can even appear shady. When Crisis Strikes looks at a variety of crises in the age of social media in South Africa and abroad, with examples of who got it right, who got it wrong and how they could have done better. The organisations range from schools to local companies to multinationals caught up in state capture claims and giants such as Boeing and BP. The book provides ten simple and effective rules to help manage crisis situations. The practical advice in each rule is backed up by academic research that draws from public relations, marketing, management, leadership and psychology. It combines insights from a seasoned journalist and an accomplished academic to give you the advice and tools to ward off a crisis before it strikes and, if it’s too late, to resolve a situation quickly and with integrity."--Back cover.

My main purpose in writing this book is to convey realistic methods of crisis prevention and mitigation that I have successfully used in over 70 serious situations for a wide variety of organizations, including service and manufacturing companies, state government, schools, restaurants, pharmaceutical companies, a hotel, a country club and an apparel retailer. The narrative portion of the book is partially fictional; however, the experiences within the narrative are taken from actual events. Only the names and locations have been changed to protect the identities of the parties involved. Many times, clients have come to me at the onset of a crisis, when they or their company have less than three months to survive. In some cases, clients have been unable to hire a regular turnaround consultant. I take them on if they agree to make available all information no matter how bad. I have always been able to save clients from their crisis situations.

Personal experiences during our darkest hours can be ranked as the most difficult, defiant, and relentless periods in our lives, nevertheless they are the exact means to teach us the best manner we can inhabit this world. All our defining moments have the potential to shift our essence from barely existing to fully living our own lives. But the manner in which we honor our lives and honor the lives of others can ease those life-threating situations, so life can be more rewarding and satisfying. Disappointments and regrets are only the effects of struggling and misunderstanding our own darkest hours.

This guide offers suggestions to college administrators for dealing with a variety of emergency or crisis situations that could affect a community college's effectiveness. The authors used the Institute for Crisis Management's (ICM) four types of crises in higher education as the framework for the guide. The four types of crises are: (1) sudden; (2) bizarre; (3) perceptual; and (4) smoldering. The sudden crisis, for which administrators can prepare, includes incidents such as fire, explosions, natural disasters, violence, and terrorist attacks. The bizarre crisis is impossible to prepare for--the guide offers the example of a student who was crushed between two elevators while riding on the roof of the elevator for sport. The perceptual crisis is also difficult to anticipate. The authors cite the example of the small college fighting the perception that because they are small they cannot offer a good education. Finally, the smoldering crisis is the most common and is characterized by a situation that starts out small and internal, but grows and becomes a crisis. Some crises, such as academic scandals or anonymous accusations, can be either sudden or smoldering, depending upon the chain of events involved in the crisis. This book concludes with examples of emergency plans. (Contains 64 references.) (NB).

When a crisis strikes, the first 120 minutes can determine the public's perceptions of the school system, employee group, community college, university or ministry, and the image the organization will have long after the situation is under control. This document defines a crisis and the need for crisis management; the result of a crisis that is not managed; the key elements of good crisis management as exemplified by Johnson & Johnson, Wisconsin Electric Power Co., and Molson Breweries; the need for communication planning and establishment of credibility before the crisis strikes; elements of a communication plan; measures to take during an actual crisis, using the example of a teachers' strike; and principles of crisis management.
