Around 1800 roughly three per cent of the human population lived in urban areas; by 2030 this number is expected to have gone up to some seventy per cent. This poses problems for traditional religions that are all rooted in rural, small-scale societies. The authors in this volume question what the possible appeal of these old religions, such as Christianity, Judaism, or Islam could be in the new urban environment and, conversely, what impact global urbanization will have on learning and on the performance and nature of ritual. Anthropologists, historians and political scientists have come together in this volume to analyse attempts made by churches and informal groups to adapt to these changes and, at the same time, to explore new ways to study religions in a largely urbanized environment.

The Resonate series recovers the ancient wisdom of Scripture and helps us understand how it resonates with our complex world. The stories and insights of each book of the Bible are brought into conversation with contemporary voices of hope and lament--the cultural messages we interact with on a daily basis. The Scriptures become a meeting ground where God speaks to the pressing concerns of our day, and we are confronted in turn with a fresh experience of God's truth. In this journey through the Gospel of John, Paul Louis Metzger wrestles with the question of what happens when God, who is love, comes to town and takes up residence among us. For some this new neighbor love is welcome; for others, unusual; for still others, suspect--even dangerous. We learn from John's Gospel what it means to be called friends and lovers of God, what it means to put love to death and what it means for love to rise again in our midst and in our lives.

Major cities have long been seen as centres of secularisation. However, the number of congregations in London grew by 50% between 1979 and the present. London’s churches have been characterised more by growth than by decline in the decades since 1980. The Desecularisation of the City provides the first academic survey of churches in London over recent decades, linking them to similar developments in other major cities across the West. Produced by a large team of scholars from a range of disciplines, this volume offers a striking and original portrait of congregational life in London since 1980. Seventeen chapters explore the diverse localities, ethnicities and denominations that make up the church in contemporary London. The vitality of London’s churches in the last four decades shows that secularisation is far from inevitable in the cities of the future. This study necessitates a significant reassessment of the dominant academic portrayal of Christianity in Britain and the West, which has, mostly, depicted cities as secular spaces within a secularising culture. It will be of great interest to scholars working across a wide range of disciplines, including history, sociology, religious studies and theology.

When our Father of Faith is tempted to sacrifice his sense of humor on the Altar of God's Demands, God intervenes in a surprising way that really makes Abe laugh. This is the same God whose hungry servant, Elijah, is fed by ravens way out on the ragged edge and towards whom Moses manages a sidewise glance while on the lookout for greener pastures. Then along comes another tough act to follow--the Wild Man of Judea appearing in the Galilee Theater and baptizing Jesus of Nazareth in the Jordan River of God's Transforming Power and Hope. Then, in the very next scene, JŽsus ben Dios, the Number One Draft Choice in all of Baseball, hops a trial-ways bus to intensive-training camp where he comes face to face with the temptations and adversities of the real world. Fortunately, JŽsus has his Spring Training Manual handy for quick reference. Jesus then launches his teaching and healing career in many forms: as a dance instructor, farmer, chef--and even as a flamboyant pyromaniac-arsonist who comes not to bring peace to the world but to set it on fire. For who can forget Marshal Jesus out along the Border of Sin and Forgiveness encountering the Ten Men-yon? Or the homefolks' chant, Dr. Jesus, he's our man! If we can't use him, nobody can!? Because when Anglo-Catholic Father Jesus meets an average parishioner at the Holy Water Basin and asks her to bless him with it, their engaging conversation prompts students of the bible and pillars of the church to take a second look in order to watch ordinary altar candles suddenly take on more beauty and meaning than they have ever imagined before. So, for those who have eyes to see: Look!

GOD IS ALWAYS ON TIME. This book is specially prepared for those who might not be sure of what to do when it seems God is silent and has not replied to their request, despite several years of earnest prayer. Right now: -Are you thinking if anything good can come out of you?-Do you feel left alone and forgotten?-Are you on the verge of losing hope? Well, that makes the two of us. Many times, I had asked myself if anything good could ever happen to me or in my life. I had felt if my life could ever get any better. There were times I became devastated with no flicker of hope, let alone a ray of a better future ahead of me. I felt God had left me alone. However, I was wrong all those times. I was wrong to think my life was in shambles because of the hardship I was facing. I was wrong to think God had forgotten me while he was preparing for me a hope and a future. I was even wrong to count myself as nobody when God sees me as the very apple of His eyes. It is so fascinating to know how God brings beauty out of ashes, gold out of the mire, glory out of the dunghill, purpose out of problems, and fame out of shame. The bible says: "And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."-John 1:46In the Bible, Nazareth was a very insignificant town in Israel. People never thought anything worthwhile could be said of Nazareth. Nazareth was a nondescript dot on the map. However, God used the nothingness of Nazareth and made them an object of envy for the nations of the world. Jesus Christ, the messiah of the world, came out that small town. Maybe you have been written off, and people had called you forsaken, just as people said if anything good could come out of Nazareth. Some people might have said to your face that you can't amount to anything in life again and that had done harm to your self-worth. However, today, I bring you good news from the Almighty God. God is about to take you out of shame into fame, and your glory will become a shining light for the world to see. You are coming out of obscurity into prosperity. My life is a testimony of God's favor is synonymous with the way God favored Esther before the King Ahasuerus (Esther 5:8). Who would have thought that a commoner like Esther could be crown a Queen? Nevertheless, she was because God favored her above her equals and counterpart. Just a day of favor from God is enough to wipe away many nights of tears. God's favor makes you appear like a 'superman' before others because, indeed, the favor of God comes with supernatural lifting. It will interest you to know that the favor of God can end the struggle of many years and grant you accelerated speed to run and outrun others. Barriers are broken. Obstacles are removed. Protocols are ignored when God chooses to favor any person. Just a night of favor can turn around many years of pain, hurts, and failureI congratulate you because you are about to enter into a new dimension of God's favor, goodness, love, and unending mercy, through the pages of this divinely inspired book. This book will show you how to see God in every situation of life, and it will restore hope, faith, and trust in God for you at every time. Additionally, you will find my inspirational story as a lesson for you to see that God is indeed a good God. Whatever you are going through is temporary and will soon pass away. Assuredly, God is not ignorant of it and He knows what you need for life and godliness. Yet, He wants you to learn the act of waiting on Him. God promised in His words that every one of your visions, aspirations, dreams, and desires would happen only when you learn to wait."But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."-Isaiah 40:31Waiting on God is to believe God's words completely. Whatever God says, He can perform it.

“For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come.” –Hebrews 13:14 At the very heart of God’s plan for the world stands an extraordinary city. Beginning with the garden of Eden in Genesis and ending with the New Jerusalem in Revelation, the biblical story reveals how God has been working throughout history to establish a city filled with his glorious presence. Tracing the development of the theme of city in both testaments, T. Desmond Alexander draws on his experience as a biblical scholar to show us God’s purpose throughout Scripture to dwell with his redeemed people in a future extraordinary city on a transformed earth. Part of the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series.
