This handbook will enable foreign-born Nigerians and their families to teach their native language to their children. Talk Nigeria makes it possible for them to not only learn the languages, but also to assist them with phonetic pronunciation of the words in their native languages. This is not just another boring language guide that is only based upon endless repetitions of language drills. It is a handbook that promotes quick and effective communication with Nigerians in the three major languages. It includes • easy-to-read translations from English into the three main languages spoken in Nigeria—Yoruba, Ibo, and Hausa, • all translations include the phonetic pronunciation for each word and phrase; • translations for greetings, everyday phrases, and a reference dictionary. An innovative way to learn to speak a very common African language, this handbook is an indispensable guide to speaking the Nigerian languages correctly and effectively.

Glocal English written by Farooq A. Kperogi and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-22 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Glocal English compares the usage patterns and stylistic conventions of the world’s two dominant native varieties of English (British and American English) with Nigerian English, which ranks as the English world’s fastest-growing non-native variety courtesy of the unrelenting ubiquity of the Nigerian (English-language) movie industry in Africa and the Black Atlantic Diaspora. Using contemporary examples from the mass media and the author’s rich experiential data, the book isolates the peculiar structural, grammatical, and stylistic characteristics of Nigerian English and shows its similarities as well as its often humorous differences with British and American English. Although Nigerian English forms the backdrop of the book, it will benefit teachers of English as a second or foreign language across the world. Similarly, because it presents complex grammatical concepts in a lucid, personal narrative style, it is useful both to a general and a specialist audience, including people who study anthropology and globalization. The true-life experiential encounters that the book uses to instantiate the differences and similarities between Nigerian English and native varieties of English will make it valuable as an empirical data mine for disciplines that investigate the movement and diffusion of linguistic codes across the bounds of nations and states in the age of globalization.

Igbo language is one of the 8 major Nigerian languages, spoken by Igbo speaking tribes of Nigeria. About 24 million people speak Igbo language. This includes the people of Abia state, Anambra state, Ebonyi state, Imo state, Delta state, Akwa Ibom state, Rivers state and some parts of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. This book is a guide to keep the tradition of Igbo speaking and culture and inculcating this to our children, and wives/husbands living in diaspora to keep the legacy. Igbo Language is not generally thought in Nigerian schools except in some schools in the East and sparingly in other parts of Nigeria. This has resulted to most people forgetting the basics which is the alphabets that serves as the bedrock of the language. This book provides some historical timelines, food, dressing, the Igbo character and the natural resources and wealth that make Nigeria the 'giant' of Africa. Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 4.28, , course: ENGLISH EDUCATION, language: English, abstract: Pidgin generally is a simplified means of communication between or among individuals of different cultures or ethnicities. Nigerian pidgin English described as a combination of indigenous language and English. It is a language derived from tile mix of various languages such as Igbo, Edo, Yoruba, Effik etc. In Africa, pidgins found include; Nigerian pidgin, Cameroonian pidgin, Serria Leone Krio etc. Pidgins are mostly inventionist and innovative in nature and because of their spontaneous adaptability, they can be as structured or as unstructured as needed unlike other languages. This is to say that in pidgin, there are no strict rules given in utterances. There are several assumptions by Akande and Salami which say that the urban characters of the university environments are strong factors influencing the students' use and attitudes to Nigerian Pidgin English. They insist that apart from their education, living within the university communities, the students are likely to enact more urban networks that are usually made up of multilingual and multi-cultural contents. Akande argues that Pidgin English could be regarded as a marker of identity and solidarity. It is an inter-ethnic code available to Nigerians, who have no other common language.

Nigeria S Diverse Peoples written by April A. Gordon and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-11-19 with Social Science categories.

Exploring the history of ethnic, regional, and religious diversity in Nigeria, this volume traces most of the country's current problems to its colonial exploitation. Plagued by ethnic divisions, economic inequality, and corruption, Nigeria appears to conform to the stereotypical view that Africa's problems are mostly the result of primitive tribalism. But as Nigeria's Diverse Peoples demonstrates, most of Nigeria's problems today were set in motion by Europeans during the slave trade and colonial eras. Focusing on three main ethnic groups (Hausa-Falani, Yoruba, and Igbo) and ranging from precolonial times to independence in 1960 to the present, this breakthrough study portrays a Nigeria now striving to make a unified nation of itself. Offering a fresh understanding not just of Nigeria but of Africa as well, readers will enter the richly complex world of Nigeria's ethnic history.
