The extraordinary life and death-defying work of one of the most important and pioneering performance artists in contemporary art. When Marina Abramović Dies examines the extraordinary life and death-defying work of one of the most pioneering artists of her generation—and one who is still at the forefront of contemporary art today. This intimate, critical biography chronicles Abramović's formative and until now undocumented years in Yugoslavia, and tells the story of her partnership with the German artist Ulay—one of the twentieth century's great examples of the fusion of artistic and private life. In one of many long-durational performances in the renewed solo career that followed, Abramović famously lived in a New York gallery for twelve days without eating or speaking, nourished only by prolonged eye contact with audience members. It was here, in 2002, that author James Westcott first encountered her, beginning an exceptionally close relation between biographer and subject. When Marina Abramović Dies draws on Westcott's personal observations of Abramović, his unprecedented access to her archive, and hundreds of hours of interviews he conducted with the artist and the people closest to her. The result is a unique and vivid portrait of the charismatic self-proclaimed “grandmother of performance art.”

For many years 'godmother of performance art' Marina Abramović and renowned director Robert Wilson had been intending to work together. Ultimately this took shape with the opera project 'The Life and Death of Marina Abramović' Abramović placed her personal archives at Wilson's disposal, and from these he forged a magnificent production involving Marina Abramović herself, composer/singer Antony and actor Willem Dafoe. This phenomenal cast plays out the theatrical narrative of images envisaged by Wilson. In collaboration with Marina Abramović, De Ketelfactory has compiled a kaleidoscopic 'making of' in which unique contributions can be seen. In 'Confession' for example, a recording of a performance by Abramović tells the stories that come up in the opera. The interviews with Abramović, Wilson, Anthony and Dafoe have been adapted for this publication. Exhibition: De Ketelfactory, Schiedam, the Netherlands (19.5.-15.7.2012).

A clothbound companion to Marina Abramovic's tribute to Maria Callas, a new performance that recreates the iconic opera diva's famous onstage death scenes An opera production conceived by the legendary performance artist Marina Abramovic (born 1946), 7 Deaths of Maria Callasis a continuation of the artist's lifelong meditation on the female body as a source of both power and pain. Here Abramovic turns her focus to renowned opera singer Maria Callas, whose stunning soprano voice captivated audiences around the world in the mid-20th century. Though she remains one of opera's greatest singers, Callas' life was beset by struggle and scandal. Today, the opera diva is remembered for having been a figure of both talent and tragedy. Through a mix of narrative opera and film, Abramovic recreates seven iconic death scenes from the American-born Greek singer's most important roles--in La Traviata, Tosca, Otello, Madame Butterfly, Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoorand Norma--followed by an interpretive recreation of Callas' own death performed onstage by Abramovic herself. This clothbound volume serves as a companion to the live performance and provides insight into the conception, planning and execution of Abramovic's project, probing the many creative elements that make up this dynamic exploration of female suffering.

'Her bravest work of performance art to date . . . Rawly intimate' Observer This memoir spans Marina Abramovic's five decade career, and tells a life story that is almost as exhilarating and extraordinary as her groundbreaking performance art. Taking us from her early life in communist ex-Yugoslavia, to her time as a young art student in Belgrade in the 1970s, where she first made her mark with a series of pieces that used the body as a canvas, the book also describes her relationship with the West German performance artist named Ulay who was her lover and sole collaborator for 12 years.

A veteran art critic helps us make sense of modern and contemporary art The landscape of contemporary art has changed dramatically during the last hundred years: from Malevich's 1915 painting of a single black square and Duchamp's 1917 signed porcelain urinal to Jackson Pollock's midcentury "drip" paintings; Chris Burden's "Shoot" (1971), in which the artist was voluntarily shot in the arm with a rifle; Urs Fischer's "You" (2007), a giant hole dug in the floor of a New York gallery; and the conceptual and performance art of today's Ai Weiwei and Marina Abramovic. The shifts have left the art-viewing public (understandably) perplexed. In The Art of Looking, renowned art critic Lance Esplund demonstrates that works of modern and contemporary art are not as indecipherable as they might seem. With patience, insight, and wit, Esplund guides us through the last century of art and empowers us to approach and appreciate it with new eyes. Eager to democratize genres that can feel inaccessible, Esplund encourages viewers to trust their own taste, guts, and common sense. The Art of Looking will open the eyes of viewers who think that recent art is obtuse, nonsensical, and irrelevant, as well as the eyes of those who believe that the art of the past has nothing to say to our present.
