Young adulthood is a particularly high risk time for excess weight gain, yet factors related to weight gain prevention in this population are poorly understood. Although moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is a primary component of many prevention efforts, recent research suggests that it may be insufficient to protect against weight gain for many individuals, likely because other physical activity and eating-related factors also influence weight. This study aimed to examine whether key eating- and physical activity related behavioral and psychological factors were associated with weight change among young adults meeting national physical activity guidelines. Young adults (ages 21-30; N=69) in the normal weight-range who met national physical activity recommendations had their weight measured by research staff, wore an accelerometer for one week, and completed self-report and interview-based measures of their weight history and key eating- and physical activity related behavioral and psychological factors. Participants gained an average of .91 kg over the past three years and engaged in an average of 274.04 minutes/week of accelerometer-measured bouted MVPA. Higher frequency of eating out was associated with greater weight gain, such that individuals above the median for weight gain ate out 7% more often than those below the median. Calorie, fat, and added-sugar intake, as well as sedentary behavior, light activity, and unbouted MVPA were unrelated to weight change. Greater hedonic hunger, dietary disinhibition, and food cravings, and lower self-efficacy for healthy eating were related to greater weight loss in those who had lost weight over the past three years, but were unrelated to weight change in those who were weight stable or who had gained weight. This study provides a preliminary investigation into factors associated with weight gain in active young adults and suggests that eating out may be a particularly useful target for weight gain prevention efforts in this population. Future research should address some of the limitations of this study, including using a longitudinal design, objectively assessing all weights, and recruiting a larger sample.

Avoiding overweight and obesity is the best-established diet-related risk factor for cancer. The proportion of people who are overweight/obese is increasing, and the amount of physical activity is decreasing in most populations, including urban populations in many developing countries. The increasing prevalence of overweight/obesity is presumably due to the increasing availability of highly palatable, high-energy foods, and an increasing sedentary lifestyle due to mechanisation of both workplace and leisure activities. Overweight/obesity and reduced physical activity increases the risk of cancers in various organs. Maintaining a healthy body weight and regular physical activity is the second most important way to prevent cancer, after tobacco control. The suggestions of possible public health actions to tackle these risk factors include the promotion of balanced diets, which are not excessive in energy, and broad education and planning to enable and encourage physical activity during work and leisure. Recommendations and a full discussion of these topics are included in the sixth volume in this series of Handbooks.

Introduction:Globally, over 1.97 billion adults and 338 million children and adolescents are living with overweight and obesity, increasing the risk of numerous co-morbidities, including at least 12 cancers [1]. WCRF/AICR conducted a literature review of diet and physical activity as determinants of weight gain, overweight and obesity in adults and children. We also introduce a novel evidence-based policy framework for promoting physical activity, and linked database, currently in development as part of the EU-funded CO-CREATE project on child and adolescent obesity prevention.Materials and Methods:Evidence on diet and physical activity as determinants and risk of weight gain, overweight and obesity was systematically extracted from existing reviews and a systematic search for recent meta-analyses, then collated and analysed. The WCRF Continuous Update Project Expert Panel drew conclusions about which exposures influence risk of weight gain, overweight and obesity, using pre-defined criteria that included evidence of biological plausibility.Results:The Panel identified strong evidence that several diet and physical activity related exposures influence the risk of weight gain, overweight and obesity in adults and children. The CUP Panel judged there is strong evidence that the following factors decrease the risk of weight gain, overweight and obesity: walking; aerobic physical activity; foods containing dietary fibre; a u2018Mediterranean typeu2019 dietary pattern; and having been breastfed. They also judged there is strong evidence the following factors increase risk: screen time; sugar sweetened drinks; u2018fast foodsu2019; and a u2018Western typeu2019 diet.Separate conclusions were drawn for adults and children in relation to screen time, considered a marker of sedentary time.However, the Panel noted that as exposures tend to cluster, physiologically interact and share common biological mechanisms, they should not be regarded as absolutely u2018singularu2019 but an integrated concept of interrelated exposures within a pattern of lifestyle.Discussion:Healthy dietary patterns help prevent excess weight gain. Achieving such patterns requires attention to the broader economic, environmental and social factors that influence and constrain peopleu2019s behaviour. The findings of this report support the need for evidence-based public health policy to help create health-enabling environments, particularly for children and adolescents. The primary purpose of fitness and body composition standards in the U.S. Armed Forces has always been to select individuals best suited to the physical demands of military service, based on the assumption that proper body weight and composition supports good health, physical fitness, and appropriate military appearance. The current epidemic of overweight and obesity in the United States affects the military services. The pool of available recruits is reduced because of failure to meet body composition standards for entry into the services and a high percentage of individuals exceeding military weight-for-height standards at the time of entry into the service leave the military before completing their term of enlistment. To aid in developing strategies for prevention and remediation of overweight in military personnel, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command requested the Committee on Military Nutrition Research to review the scientific evidence for: factors that influence body weight, optimal components of a weight loss and weight maintenance program, and the role of gender, age, and ethnicity in weight management.
