When the Eternal Can Be Met excavates the philosophy behind the theology of the twentieth century's most prominent Christian writers: C.S. Lewis, T.S. Eliot, and W.H. Auden. These three literary giants converted to Christianity within little more than a decade of one another, and interestingly, all three theological authors turned to the theme of time. All three authors also came to remarkably similar conclusions about time, positing that the temporal present moment allowed one to meet the eternal. The prominent philosopher Henri Bergson wrote about time's power to transform an individual's emotional and spiritual state decades before Lewis, Eliot, and Auden sought to creatively construct a fictive or poetic theology of time. When the Eternal Can Be Met argues that one cannot fully understand Lewis, Eliot, and Auden's theology of time without understanding Bergson's theories. From the secular philosophy of Bergson dawned the most important works of literary theology and treatments of time of the twentieth century, and in the Bergson-influenced literary constructs of Lewis, Eliot, and Auden, a common theological articulation sounds out - time present is where humans meet God.

Two states at all times most interesting for dreamers are lucid dreaming and prophetic dreams. However, no one ever considered them to be two equal types of dreams. Oneironauts participating in our project already use both aspects for several decades. “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). The key theme of the Gospel of John is “being born again.” There is no concept in Scripture more vital than being born again, for without it, no one can enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Yet, most Christians do not understand “what being born again truly means or how one can experience it. Being born again is the transformation of a sinner, destined for hell, into a righteous person through faith in the Original Gospel of truth and the reception of the remission of sins. Therefore, if any sin still remains in your heart, you must acknowledge that you have not been born again. The reason some Christians still have sin in their hearts is because the gospel they believe in is incomplete. Just as the water in the stone jars at the wedding in Cana, filled to the brim, was turned into wine, the complete Gospel of truth transforms us into the righteous through being born again. Now, Christians must leave behind the village of religion, steeped in elitism and hypocrisy. Then, they will encounter the Lord of life, “who came by water and blood” (1 John 5:6). When this happens, they will be liberated from sin and all bondage. And they will enjoy God’s blessings as Jesus said, “The truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Grief over the loss of those we love is one of the most painful parts of life. But Christianity has long offered consolation to those who grieve in the form of the Easter promise. Death is not the end. Beyond it lies a realm of perfect joy, where mourning is no more and every tear is wiped away. But won’t this promise have limits if, as Christians have traditionally believed, some of God’s creatures are eternally lost? Can I really be perfectly happy in heaven if, say, my children are damned or annihilated? And what about the Christian teaching that those in heaven are morally sanctified? Doesn’t this mean they will be perfected in a love so wide it includes even our enemies—and hence the lost? While delving deeply into the nature of grief and its relation to Christian ethics, this book explores the reasoning that generates this “problem of heavenly grief,” examines purported solutions, and invites deeper reflection on a frequently dismissed idea that avoids the problem altogether: the universalist notion that there are no limits to Easter’s promise because all are ultimately saved.

Christ. The Christian Experience in the Modern World focuses on the question of salvation for all people. Using seven 'anthropological constants', Schillebeeckx innovatively shows the social and political relevance of faith. Inspired by liberation and feminist theologies, he puts strong emphasis on human experience and on the importance of examining church teaching in its historical context. This volume is a testimony of Schillebeeckx' ground breaking attempt to rethink doctrine in the light of the research on the historical Jesus. Instead of starting with Christianity's great creedal statements about Christ and the Trinity, he focuses on the subjective experience of the first generations of believers as expressed in the New Testament. This choice stirred considerable controversy and a Vatican investigation but inspired and still keeps to inspire readers in their personal approach to Christian faith.

An indirect response to Darwin's landmark work "On the Origin of Species," Drummond shows that faith and science actually go more hand in hand than most of us as theologians are willing to accept. By going over the facts of science, Drummond is able to show how the two relate so that we can reconcile our Christian beliefs in the world that is obsessed with the Scientific Method.

Word And Object New Edition written by Willard Van Orman Quine and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-25 with Philosophy categories.

A new edition of Quine's most important work. Willard Van Orman Quine begins this influential work by declaring, "Language is a social art. In acquiring it we have to depend entirely on intersubjectively available cues as to what to say and when." As Patricia Smith Churchland notes in her foreword to this new edition, with Word and Object Quine challenged the tradition of conceptual analysis as a way of advancing knowledge. The book signaled twentieth-century philosophy's turn away from metaphysics and what Churchland calls the "phony precision" of conceptual analysis. In the course of his discussion of meaning and the linguistic mechanisms of objective reference, Quine considers the indeterminacy of translation, brings to light the anomalies and conflicts implicit in our language's referential apparatus, clarifies semantic problems connected with the imputation of existence, and marshals reasons for admitting or repudiating each of various categories of supposed objects. In addition to Churchland's foreword, this edition offers a new preface by Quine's student and colleague Dagfinn Follesdal that describes the never-realized plans for a second edition of Word and Object, in which Quine would offer a more unified treatment of the public nature of meaning, modalities, and propositional attitudes.
