Excerpt from The Normans in Europe The history of the Scandinavian Exodus which began in the ninth century falls conveniently into two periods. During the first, (800 circ. - 912) the people of Denmark, Sweden and Norway harassed Europe with their inroads, and formed definite settlements in the British Isles, Russia, and France. During the second, (1029-1066) France itself became the starting-place for a new series of incursions, led by men of Scandinavian descent, who had by that time adopted French customs and language. To this period belong the settlements in Spain and Italy, and the Norman conquest of England. The aim of this book is to present a connected view of these incursions, and to bring clearly before the reader the important fact, that the Norman Conquest was only the last of this long series of settlements and conquests. The narrow limits required by the character of the series have necessitated much compression. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from English Literature: From the Beginning to the Norman Conquest This book is necessarily, as far as the chapter on King AElfred, a recast of my previous book on Early English Literature up to the Days of Alfred. That book, in two volumes, was too expensive and too long for students in schools. I chose to write it at that length, and I am glad I did so. I was enabled to introduce a great deal of correlative matters which I thought were needed to bring the literature into touch with the history of the country; and in order to give life, colour, and reality to a time so far away, and in which so little interest is taken by the English public. But having tried to do this, I have now left out these correlative matters; shortened the whole of the history up to AElfred; rewritten it, and rearranged it. Of course, some of the older book remains mixed up with the new; - those parts of it especially which give an account of the poems. The translations, though carefully revised, are the same; but many of them have been omitted. I have written about King AElfred at a length somewhat out of proportion with the rest of the book, but the freshly awakened interest of the public in his life and character induced me to give a full account of all that was personal in his literary work. Excerpt from Danes, Saxons, and Normans: Or, Stories of Our Ancestors IN the following pages I have endeavoured to tell in a popular way the story of the Norman Conquest, and to give an idea of the principal personages who figured in England at the period when that memorable event took place; and I have endeavoured, I hope not without some degree of success, to treat the subject in a popular and picturesque style, without any sacrifice of historic truth. Excerpt from The Normans in European History I wish to thank the authorities of the Lowell Institute and the University of California, and to acknowledge helpful criticism from my colleague Professor William S. Excerpt from The Saxon Church and the Norman Conquest The general plan of the series. If here and there this has resulted in some slight divergence of view between one volume and another, he believes that it will prove rather advantageous than detrimental to the utility of the work; for much would be lost, and very little gained, by preventing a writer from giving free expres. Sion to his own view of the facts, and of the inferences to be drawn from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Norman Britain This little book does not profess to be a history of events. In a series of short essays, treating facts rather as illustrations than as invested with any inde pendent importance, I have endeavoured to describe how the Teutonic Northmen were brought under Romance influences before they conquered our Teu tonic land and, considering the Norman period as a crisis in the long story of our people, when a Romance element was violently introduced into the population itself and into every phase of its life, to show how this foreign element, overwhelming as it seemed at the time, consummated many changes already in progress, preserved much, destroyed little, and made no violent break in our history. I have also tried here and there, as my space would allow, to point out some of the effects of the Norman rule on our later history, both as to what we have kept and as to what we have cast aside as hindrances to our national development. As Mr. Freeman, besides his great works on the Norman Conquest and on the reign of William Rufus, has also published a hand book of the Norman period, it may seem that in writing this volume I have been fishing in his waters. It was, however, at his request, and with his generous invitation to me to make use of all he had written, that I undertook to attempt the subject that he has made his own. Such as my work is, it will, I how, be evident that it has not been done without some familiarity with original authorities acquired not for this occasion only. References to most of the authorities I have used will be found in the foot notes. Since the publication of the Introduction to English History by Professor S. R. Gardiner and Mr. J. B. Mullinger, brief notices of these authorities are no longer wanted, and for any longer account of them I have no space. Excerpt from Wulf the Saxon: A Story of the Norman Conquest Although the immediate results of the Battle of Hastings may have been of less importance to the world than were those of some other great battles, the struggle has, in the long run, had a greater influence upon the destiny of mankind than any other similar event that has ever taken place. That admixture of Saxon, Danish, and British races which had come to be known under the general name of English, was in most respects far behind the rest of Europe. The island was, as it had always been, - except during the rule of two or three exceptionally strong kings, - distracted by internal dissensions. Broad lines of division still separated the North from the South, and under weak Kings the powerful Earls became almost independent. The enterprise that had distinguished their Saxon and Danish ancestors seems to have died out. There was a general indisposition to change, and except in her ecclesiastical buildings, England made but little progress in civilization from the time of Alfred to that of Harold. Its insular position cut it off from taking part in that rapid advance which, beginning in Italy, was extending throughout Europe. The arrival, however, of the impetuous Norman race, securing as it did a close connection with the Continent, quickened the intellect of the people, raised their intelligence, was of inestimable benefit to the English, and played a most important part in raising England among the nations.
